YouTube for Android testing ‘Play something’ FAB

YouTube has recently introduced a new feature to its mobile app, enhancing user experience with the addition of a floating action button (FAB) labeled “Play something.” This button, designed with white text on a striking black background, is hard to miss and serves as a gateway to content consumption.

Upon tapping the “Play something” button, users are greeted with a video in the Shorts player. However, this feature is not limited to YouTube Shorts; it also accommodates regular content within a portrait interface. The layout includes large buttons for liking, disliking, commenting, and sharing, conveniently positioned on the right side, while a timeline scrubber sits at the bottom for easy navigation.

Interestingly, when the miniplayer is activated, the “Play something” button gracefully disappears, allowing for an uninterrupted viewing experience. This design choice aligns with the app’s primary purpose: to facilitate seamless content consumption.

The introduction of the FAB is a thoughtful addition, reflecting YouTube’s understanding of user preferences and viewing habits. This feature has been under testing since last year, with the latest reports indicating its presence in version 19.50 for Android devices.
