I want to love the new Castlevania, but it just feels a little off

The game Castlevania: Belmont's Curse struggles to display on monitors with a refresh rate exceeding 120 Hz, which was resolved by capping the in-game frame rate at 120 fps. The gameplay features a mix of enjoyable elements and frustrating mechanics, such as a lengthy wind-up on Rose Belmont's whip and a limited invincibility frame for the dodge mechanic, leading to difficulties during platforming and boss encounters. The game includes tedious platforming challenges that require precise controls, and the timing for certain attacks feels misaligned. Belmont's Curse draws heavily from the Netflix Castlevania series, featuring some of the same voice actors, but the static artwork in early cutscenes feels underwhelming. The game improves after reaching Dracula's Castle, introducing clever platforming mechanics and engaging puzzles. Despite some control issues, the game includes satisfying hitstop effects and well-presented tarot cards that enhance the experience.

Google Messages adding ‘enhanced protection mode’ as Android works to combat phone scam

Google has introduced new features to enhance user security on its Android platform during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, focusing on combating messaging and phone scams. The key feature is an enhanced protection mode for the Google Messages app, which includes Scam Detection using Private AI Compute to analyze message context and identify scammer intent through cloud-based Gemini models. This mode complements existing on-device detection and aims to uncover sophisticated scams while ensuring user data remains encrypted and secure. Additionally, link protections have been upgraded with real-time web signals to assess unfamiliar links' trustworthiness, available on select devices such as Pixel 10+, Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and Z Fold 8. Redesigned warnings will provide clearer context before users tap links from unknown numbers, previously limited to select countries or devices with Android Advanced Protection. Google is also expanding its on-device Scam Detection to more brands beyond Pixel, including HONOR, Infinix, iQOO, itel, JOVI, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, TECNO, vivo, and Xiaomi. For phone scams, automatic screen-share privacy will conceal sensitive information in native apps and extend to Chrome and WebView on devices running Android 15 and above. Google plans to block apps from enabling call forwarding in the background to prevent one-time passcode theft, with this feature rolling out in early December on Pixel and select other devices. Android will also proactively warn users if a scammer attempts to trick them into entering an MMI forwarding code.

GLM’s 23 Windows Bug Finds Are Z.ai Building a Security Research Resume

Z.ai's GLM model identified 23 vulnerabilities in the Windows operating system, confirmed by Microsoft's Security Response Center (MSRC). This marks a significant advancement in commercial software security, demonstrating the model's autonomous capability in independent vulnerability discovery. Since the release of GLM-5.2, Z.ai has uncovered over 4,200 vulnerabilities across about 390 open-source projects, with over a thousand categorized as critical to high severity. Z.ai has established a public Security Disclosure Ledger to track its findings through a coordinated disclosure process. The confirmation of vulnerabilities by MSRC is notable due to the rigorous nature of their vulnerability triage operations. Z.ai's GLM-5.3 achieved a score of 84.5% on CyberGym, outperforming competitors like Anthropic's Mythos 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol. Reports indicate that NIST's AI safety division has flagged GLM-5.3 due to concerns about its cyber capabilities, particularly regarding the potential for modified versions to reduce safety features. Z.ai plans to continue targeting commercial software in its efforts.

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is almost the Android tablet we needed

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro features a 12-inch display with a resolution of 2800 x 1840 pixels and utilizes "Nanomatte" technology to reduce glare. It is priced at 9.99 and is one of four models in the Alexa Tablet series, which includes an 8-inch version starting at .99. The tablet is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 processor and offers access to the Play Store, moving away from Amazon's previous proprietary operating system. The audio quality is satisfactory, and while the cameras are functional, they lack color accuracy. Users can customize the interface to reduce Amazon's influence, but the Alexa Plus assistant is less effective compared to Google’s Gemini assistant. The tablet is suitable for media consumption and casual use, although it competes with the iPad in terms of software and app support.

YouTube bringing automatic background play to Android Automotive cars

Google is enhancing the Android Automotive experience with app updates under the “Google built-in” initiative, introducing more video applications and allowing YouTube to operate in the background for Premium subscribers. Over the next few weeks, vehicles with Android Automotive will see a redesigned Play Store tailored for various display sizes and improved app discoverability, with over 700 applications currently available. New apps like STARZ, Firefox, Ludo King, and JioHotstar are expected to launch soon. Background play for YouTube allows drivers to enjoy video content while parked and switch to audio playback while driving. Although initially announced for 2025, this is the first direct mention of the feature for YouTube. Android Auto is also anticipated to support video applications and background play capabilities in the future.
