Apple Blocks Popular Torrent Tracker iTorrent on iPhone

In a significant move, Apple has effectively barred the widely-used torrent tracker iTorrent from its iPhone platform. This development, reported by TorrentFreak, underscores the ongoing tension between digital rights and corporate policies.

The torrent protocol, which facilitates file sharing among users, has long been prohibited on Apple devices. However, the emergence of alternative app stores had previously allowed such applications to find their way onto iPhones. In late August, it was revealed that iTorrent had been removed from the AltStore PAL marketplace.

Daniel Vinogradov, the founder of iTorrent, expressed his surprise at the sudden action taken by Apple, which included the revocation of his developer account. Despite his attempts to reach out to Apple’s support team, he reported receiving no response. Experts from TorrentFreak suggest that this incident illustrates Apple’s firm stance against piracy and its ability to exert control over applications, even those installed through unofficial channels.

Shane Gill, co-founder of AltStore PAL, confirmed ongoing communication with Apple regarding the issue. “We have explained the situation to them, and they promised to look into it, but we have yet to receive any further information,” he stated.

In a response to inquiries from journalists, Apple clarified that the decision to remove the torrent service was made “to comply with regulations related to government sanctions in various jurisdictions.” The company also noted that the developer had been informed of this decision.
