Microsoft has issued a cautionary note to users regarding the creation of Windows 11 installer media, specifically highlighting a potential bug that could hinder future security updates for new PC installations. This issue is particularly pertinent for professionals setting up systems in business or educational settings, as well as for tech enthusiasts who have recently assembled their own machines.
Details of the Bug
The company detailed the bug on its known issues page for Windows 11 (version 24H2), stating:
“When using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates. This occurs only when the media is created to include the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates as part of the installation.”
This situation arises from installers created with the October and November patches released between October 8, 2024, and November 12, 2024. It’s important to note that systems that received these updates through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog are not affected.
Recommended Actions
To resolve this issue, users will need to rebuild their Windows 11 media installers to incorporate the December 2024 patch update, which was released on December 10th. A fresh installation of Windows will then be necessary. To completely sidestep this problem, Microsoft recommends ensuring that any media used to install Windows 11, version 24H2, includes the December 2024 monthly security update.
In addition to this installer media issue, reports from Bleeping Computer indicate that the Windows 11 24H2 update has been accompanied by other bugs. These include complications with certain audio devices, difficulties launching Outlook when paired with an outdated Google Workspace Sync, and a peculiar compatibility issue affecting some Ubisoft games, which are gradually receiving patches.
