Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27729 (Canary Channel)

Hello Windows Insiders, today marks the release of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27729 to the Canary Channel. It’s worth noting that there are currently no plans to release SDKs for the 27xxx series builds.

Changes and Improvements

[Settings]

  • The latest update introduces the ability to configure the Copilot key. Users can now set this key to launch an MSIX packaged and signed app, ensuring that it meets the necessary security and privacy standards. Until a different experience is selected, the Copilot key will continue to launch the Copilot app on devices where it is installed. This new setting can be accessed via Settings > Personalization > Text input. For users without a dedicated Copilot key on their keyboard, adjustments to this setting will have no effect. Further refinements to this feature are anticipated in future updates.

Fixes

[General]

  • We have resolved an underlying issue that was causing certain games, including Microsoft Solitaire & Casual Games, to crash upon launch after the installation of Build 27718 and later.

[Windowing]

  • An issue that could lead to a temporary black screen for some users when utilizing ALT + Tab has been fixed.

[Other]

  • We have addressed a problem affecting BitLocker functionality for a small number of Insiders in the previous two flights.

Known Issues

[General]

  • [IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] Users transitioning to the Canary Channel from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel, or retail on a new Copilot+ PC may encounter issues with Windows Hello PIN and biometrics, receiving error 0xd0000225 along with the message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available.” Recreating the PIN can be done by selecting “Set up my PIN.”
  • We are currently investigating reports of rollbacks (error code 0xc190010) experienced by some Insiders while attempting to install the latest Canary builds.
  • [UPDATED] Certain Insiders with older NVIDIA GPUs (such as the GTX 970, Quadro K620, etc.) are facing issues with displays freezing at a black screen or encountering errors in Device Manager. We are aware of this situation and are working diligently on a resolution. Affected users can boot into Windows Recovery (WinRE), revert to the previous build, and pause updates in Windows Update until a new build with a fix is released. If you paused updates with Build 27723 last week, you will need to un-pause and re-pause updates to remain on Build 27718 for the time being.
  • [NEW] We are addressing a new bugcheck issue causing some Insiders to encounter a PAGEFAULTINNONPAGEDAREA error starting from Build 27723.

[Input]

  • We are working on a fix for an underlying issue that prevents the Emoji Panel and Clipboard History from opening in certain applications, including Registry Editor.

Snipping Tool Update

An update for the Snipping Tool (version 11.2409.23.0 and newer) is being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels, introducing a new “Copy as table” feature.

This enhancement allows users to copy structured table data effortlessly into emails, documents, or spreadsheets. To utilize this feature, capture a screenshot containing table data, select “Text actions,” and then choose “Copy as table.” Please note that this feature performs best when the screenshot includes only one table.

FEEDBACK: Please submit your feedback in the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Snipping Tool.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel

  • The builds released to the Canary Channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be viewed as aligned with any specific Windows release. Features and experiences in these builds may evolve, be removed, or never reach general release as we explore various concepts and gather feedback.
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a limited group of Insiders and gradually expanding as we monitor feedback.
  • Some features may debut in the Dev and Beta Channels before making their way to the Canary Channel.
  • Features currently under development may not be fully localized initially, with localization occurring over time as they are finalized. Users are encouraged to report any localization issues via the Feedback Hub.
  • To exit the Canary Channel, a clean installation of Windows 11 will be necessary. Insiders cannot switch to a channel receiving builds with lower build numbers without performing a clean installation due to technical requirements.
  • The desktop watermark displayed in the lower right corner of the screen is a standard feature for these pre-release builds.
  • For a comprehensive overview of which build is in which Insider channel, please refer to Flight Hub.

Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon
