Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27823 (Canary Channel)

Hello Windows Insiders, today marks the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27823 to the Canary Channel. It is important to note that there are currently no plans to release SDKs for the 27xxx series builds.

Changes and Improvements

[General]

  • This update introduces a modest array of general enhancements and fixes aimed at refining the overall experience for Insiders utilizing this build on their devices.

[Settings]

  • [ADDED] A new feature, “top cards,” has been introduced under Settings > System > About. These top cards offer a streamlined view of your PC’s essential specifications—processor, RAM, storage, and GPU—allowing users to quickly grasp their system’s capabilities. This innovation is designed to facilitate informed decision-making regarding potential hardware upgrades. Please note that these top cards will not be visible on managed commercial PCs and are currently available only on specific PC form factors, such as desktops.

Fixes

[File Explorer]

  • Resolved an issue causing File Explorer to appear blank when accessed via ALT + Tab from a minimized state in the latest Canary builds.
  • Corrected a problem where the “see more” menu “…” in the command bar was misaligned at certain resolutions.
  • As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing accessibility, this release includes improved text scaling support (accessible via Settings > Accessibility > Text size) throughout File Explorer, including File Open/Save dialogs and copy dialogs.

[Input]

  • Fixed a bug that could lead to a ctfmon.exe crash when copying content from specific applications.
  • Addressed an issue where GetRawInputData was failing to read data in certain instances, resulting in an invalid handle error.

[Login and Lock]

  • Fixed a crash issue that occurred when clicking on Sign in Options for some Insiders.

[Settings]

  • Resolved a crash issue within Settings when interacting with Bluetooth & Devices > Cameras.
  • Fixed an unexpected space issue at the top of System > Sound and other Settings pages.

[Printing]

  • Corrected an issue preventing non-admin users from uninstalling printers they had added.
  • Fixed a problem causing some Insiders to receive an unexpected message indicating that the Send to OneNote driver for printing was malfunctioning.

[Other]

  • Resolved an issue that was causing certain applications to fail to install in Builds 27813 and later.
  • Fixed an underlying issue leading to unexpected bugchecks with UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR during upgrades or clean installations of the latest builds.
  • Addressed a problem where pixels may appear inverted when using CopyPixels under certain conditions.
  • Fixed an issue in the latest Canary builds where traffic routing might not function correctly with connected network adapters.

Known Issues

[General]

  • [IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] Insiders transitioning to the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel, or retail may encounter a loss of Windows Hello PIN and biometrics, resulting in error 0xd0000225 and the message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available.” Users can recreate their PIN by selecting “Set up my PIN.”
  • [NEW] The toggle for receiving the latest updates via Settings > Windows Update is currently experiencing a visual issue, turning off automatically. This will be addressed in a forthcoming update.

[Taskbar]

  • We are actively working on a fix for an issue where taskbar icons do not increase in size as expected when the PC is used in tablet mode.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel

  • The builds released to the Canary Channel reflect the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be regarded as aligned with any specific Windows release. Features and experiences included in these builds may evolve, be removed, or replaced, and may not be released beyond Windows Insiders. Some features may eventually appear in future Windows releases when they are ready.
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a select group of Insiders and gradually expanding as feedback is monitored.
  • Some features may debut in the Dev and Beta Channels before making their way to the Canary Channel.
  • Features currently under active development may not be fully localized, with localization occurring over time as features are finalized. Insiders are encouraged to report any localization issues via the Feedback Hub.
  • To exit the Canary Channel, a clean installation of Windows 11 will be necessary. Insiders cannot switch to a channel receiving builds with lower build numbers without performing a clean installation due to technical setup requirements.
  • The desktop watermark displayed in the lower right corner of the desktop is a standard feature for these pre-release builds.
  • For a comprehensive overview of which build is in which Insider channel, please refer to Flight Hub.

Thank you, Amanda & Brandon
