Hello Windows Insiders, today marks the release of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27842 to the Canary Channel. Notably, there are no plans to release SDKs for the 27xxx series builds at this time.
Changes and Improvements
[General]
- The enhanced battery iconography in Windows 11 may temporarily vanish for Windows Insiders in the current flights as we begin to reintroduce this change.
- A new, more streamlined user interface for unexpected restarts is being previewed. This design aligns better with the principles of Windows 11, aiming to facilitate a swift return to productivity. The experience has been simplified while retaining essential technical information. For Windows Insiders, this will appear as a “green screen” and is rolling out to those on Windows 11, version 24H2 and higher across the Beta, Dev, and Canary Channels.
[Windows Security]
- We are reintroducing a change in the Windows Security app that will display additional details, such as the manufacturer and version of Pluton TPM chips, if your PC is equipped with one. This information can be found under Device security > Security processor details.
[Other]
- The support for the Visual Studio Graphics Analyzer’s shader debugging feature has been removed. Users may experience crashes in Visual Studio or during analysis sessions if they attempt to use this feature. We recommend utilizing alternative graphics debuggers like PIX for D3D12 or RenderDoc.
- To enhance security and user experience, the bypassnro.cmd script has been removed from this build. This change ensures that all users complete setup with internet connectivity and a Microsoft Account.
Fixes
[General]
- Resolved an issue that caused the toggle for receiving the latest updates via Settings > Windows Update to malfunction and turn off automatically.
- Addressed a bugcheck issue that some Insiders experienced with WHEAUNCORRECTABLEERROR during various actions on their PCs.
[Taskbar & System Tray]
- Improved the reliability of explorer.exe in the latest builds.
- Fixed an issue where using Hebrew or Arabic as the display language caused focus movement through taskbar icons to behave incorrectly when pressing WIN + T followed by arrow keys.
[Administrator Protection]
- Resolved an issue that could lead to high CPU usage by lsass.exe, affecting performance after enabling Administrator Protection.
[Input]
- Fixed a significant crash in ctfmon.exe that impacted typing capabilities.
- Addressed a crash in DWM when inking, which could result in a brief black screen flash.
[Login and Lock]
- Slightly updated the web sign-in icon for better alignment with other icons on the login screen.
[Windows Security]
- Corrected an issue where the Smart App Control icon was not displaying properly in the Windows Security app.
[Display and Graphics]
- Fixed an issue where external graphics cards connected via Thunderbolt were not being recognized in certain scenarios.
- Resolved a problem where some JPG images failed to display, despite functioning correctly in earlier builds.
- Addressed an issue requiring users to press the Windows key plus P twice to switch display topologies.
[Other]
- Fixed an issue preventing the IP Helper Service from starting in the latest builds, which may have affected some applications.
- Resolved crashes related to midisrv.exe in the latest builds.
- Fixed an issue where the Run dialog did not show an autocomplete dropdown when typing a file path.
Known Issues
[General]
- [IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] Users joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel, or retail will lose access to Windows Hello PIN and biometrics, encountering error 0xd0000225 with the message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available.” Users can recreate their PIN by selecting “Set up my PIN.”
- [NEW] We are addressing an issue where night light functionality is not working for some Insiders following the latest flight.
[Xbox Controllers]
- [NEW] Some Insiders are facing a bugcheck issue when using their Xbox Controller via Bluetooth. To resolve this, open Device Manager, select “View” and then “Devices by Driver.” Locate the driver named “oemXXX.inf (XboxGameControllerDriver.inf)” and uninstall it.
[Taskbar]
- We are currently working on a fix for an issue where taskbar icons do not resize appropriately when using the PC in tablet mode.
Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel
- The builds released to the Canary Channel showcase the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be interpreted as aligned with any specific Windows release. Features and experiences in these builds may evolve, be removed, or never reach general release as we explore various concepts and gather feedback.
- Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a select group of Insiders and gradually expanding based on feedback.
- Some features may debut in the Dev and Beta Channels before appearing in the Canary Channel.
- Features under active development may not be fully localized initially, with localization occurring as features are finalized. Please report any localization issues via the Feedback Hub.
- To exit the Canary Channel, a clean installation of Windows 11 is necessary. Insiders cannot switch to a channel receiving builds with lower build numbers without performing a clean install due to technical requirements.
- The desktop watermark in the lower right corner of the desktop is a standard feature for these pre-release builds.
- For a comprehensive overview of which build is in each Insider channel, please refer to Flight Hub.
Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon
