Microsoft has announced that support for its Windows 10 operating system will officially conclude on October 14. While devices running Windows 10 will continue to operate post-deadline, they will no longer receive essential security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. This cessation of support poses potential security vulnerabilities for both individual users and the broader Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) community.
Upgrade Process at CWRU
Within the CWRU community, numerous computers are eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11 without causing any disruption to ongoing work. University Technology ([U]Tech) has initiated this upgrade process, which will be rolled out as an update over the coming weeks. However, certain devices may require a more thorough assessment due to their inability to upgrade seamlessly.
In the months ahead, [U]Tech staff will reach out to those whose computers necessitate an assessment. Here’s what to expect during this evaluation:
- Review of your current hardware specifications
- Identification of critical software compatibility with Windows 11
The results of this assessment will guide the following outcomes:
- Your computer may be upgraded to Windows 11 without disrupting your work.
- Your device may need replacement if it cannot be upgraded.
- A Windows 10 Extended Security Update (ESU) license may be applied if necessary.
Benefits of Early Planning
Engaging in early planning is crucial for several reasons:
- It helps prevent last-minute disruptions to your work.
- It ensures appropriate budget allocation for any required hardware or licenses.
- It allows for thorough testing of critical applications.
- It distributes the workload among technical teams effectively.
- It maintains the security posture of systems.
- It prevents denied access to the CWRU computer network.
If you have not yet been contacted by [U]Tech or your specific school or college regarding the assessment process by June 30, it is advisable to reach out to the service desk. When doing so, please be ready to provide your school/college, department, and either the device name or the serial/service tag number.
To locate your device name, simply type “device name” in the search field on your computer desktop. The serial or service tag number is typically found on the underside of your device.
