Copilot on Windows App Adds Semantic File Search and New Homepage for Insiders

Microsoft has embarked on an innovative journey with the testing of semantic search and a revamped homepage within its Copilot app for Windows. This update, available to Insiders on Copilot+ PCs, introduces a semantic file search feature that empowers users to locate documents and images through natural language prompts, enhancing the overall user experience.

This development mirrors the AI-driven Windows Search experience that Microsoft rolled out earlier this year for Copilot+ PCs. However, the Copilot app distinguishes itself with a robust permission system, allowing users to dictate what the chatbot can access or read, thereby ensuring a personalized and secure interaction.

For those looking to optimize their Windows experience, a new free newsletter is now available. Subscribers will receive three time-saving tips every Friday, along with complimentary copies of Paul Thurrott’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 Field Guides, typically valued at .99, as a special welcome gift.

The latest update to the Copilot app, which is being gradually rolled out to all Insiders, also features a redesigned homepage. This new interface prominently displays recent apps, files, and conversations, making it easier for users to access their most-used resources. Users will find recent files from applications such as Word and Photos, as well as other documents listed in the “Recent” Windows folder.

The Windows Insider team has reassured users that “these are local files stored on your computer, and Copilot doesn’t scan your entire system or upload anything automatically.” They further clarified that if a user chooses to attach a file for processing, that action grants Copilot permission to handle it. Importantly, no information is shared without explicit consent from the user.

As part of the ongoing enhancements for Insiders, Microsoft has also introduced the Windows 11 Canary build 27928. This update shifts more time and language settings from the traditional Control Panel into the new Settings app, streamlining user access to essential configurations.
