E-News | WVU departments have one year left to replace computers that can’t upgrade to Windows 11

WVU’s Transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11

West Virginia University (WVU) has set a firm deadline for the replacement of all computers still operating on Windows 10. By September 30, 2025, these machines must be either upgraded to Windows 11 or replaced entirely. This mandate encompasses all WVU campuses, including the Health Sciences Center, ensuring a unified approach to technology across the institution.

To maintain a secure network environment, any computers that have not been upgraded or replaced by the specified date will be removed from the WVU network. This measure aims to mitigate potential security risks, with exceptions made only in rare and carefully scrutinized circumstances.

Faculty members, researchers, and administrative staff who are still utilizing any version of Windows 10 are encouraged to take immediate action. Collaboration with the IT support team within their respective colleges or departments is essential to assess the feasibility of an upgrade. If an upgrade is not possible, they should consult with Information Security to explore available alternatives.

In July, the Information Technology Services (ITS) department undertook an initiative to upgrade all WVU-managed computers capable of supporting Windows 11. During this process, ITS identified thousands of machines that were incompatible with the new operating system and communicated these findings to college and department IT support teams.

For those seeking recommended Windows computers, the Mountaineer Marketplace offers a convenient solution. Users can log in via portal.wvu.edu, navigate to “Office/IT Supplies,” and select “Dell Computers and Hardware” for suitable options.

College and department administrators requiring further guidance should engage with their IT support teams or reach out to their Computer Support Contact at the Health Sciences Center. For those unsure of their CSC, logging in with a WVU email address will provide access to relevant information. Should any login issues arise, assistance is available at 304-293-4444.

It is important to note that Microsoft will cease support for Windows 10 after October 2025. Consequently, devices still operating on this outdated system will no longer receive critical security updates. Fortunately, all major WVU systems and services, including SOLE, have been vetted for compatibility with Windows 11, minimizing the likelihood of disruptions during the upgrade process.
