E-News | WVU departments to replace computers that can’t upgrade to Windows 11

All computers at West Virginia University (WVU) still operating on Windows 10 must be replaced by September 30, 2025, if they cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. This mandate encompasses all WVU campuses, including those at the Health Sciences Center.

Machines that remain on Windows 10 beyond this deadline will be removed from the WVU network to mitigate security risks, with exceptions made only in rare cases that will undergo thorough scrutiny.

Guidance for Faculty and Staff

Faculty members, researchers, and administrative staff currently using any version of Windows 10 are urged to collaborate with their college or department IT support teams without delay. The goal is to assess the feasibility of an upgrade; if that is not possible, they should engage with Information Security to explore alternative options.

In July, Information Technology Services (ITS) undertook the task of upgrading all WVU-managed computers capable of supporting Windows 11. However, they also identified thousands of machines incompatible with the new operating system and communicated this information to the relevant college and department IT support teams.

Finding Compatible Hardware

For those seeking WVU-recommended Windows computers, access the Mountaineer Marketplace by logging into portal.wvu.edu, then navigate to “Office/IT Supplies” and select “Dell Computers and Hardware.”

College and department administrators in need of assistance should connect with their IT support teams or reach out to their Computer Support Contact at the Health Sciences Center. If the identity of your CSC is unclear, log in using your WVU email address to review the relevant article. Should you encounter login difficulties, please call 304-293-4444.

It is important to note that Microsoft will cease support for Windows 10 after October 2025. Consequently, any devices still operating on this platform will no longer receive critical security updates. All major WVU systems and services, including SOLE, have been thoroughly vetted with Windows 11, ensuring that units are unlikely to face disruptions during the upgrade process.
