The company has been vocal about its efforts to enhance the efficiency of Windows, with advocates frequently asserting that Windows 11 has become significantly more responsive. However, there remains an unspoken reality that older versions of Windows often perform admirably on contemporary hardware, contrasting sharply with the sluggishness of today’s software.
Recently, Microsoft announced its ambition to reduce Windows’ memory footprint, aiming for a scenario where 8 GB of RAM would suffice for acceptable performance. This initiative could potentially serve as a beacon of hope amid ongoing memory shortages and escalating prices, prompting developers to prioritize efficient RAM usage over the addition of unnecessary features or excessive advertisements.
Challenges with Updates
Yet, a recent experience sheds light on another pressing issue: the overwhelming number of updates released by vendors, Microsoft included. In a recent article, I explored a new method to bypass the Microsoft account requirement during the setup of Windows 11 Home edition. To validate this claim, I powered up an x64 Windows laptop, only to encounter a familiar frustration.
This particular machine had been updated less than a year ago, but the time it took to boot without being bombarded by Windows Update notifications was staggering—approximately seven hours. The update process involved a multitude of patches for Windows components, firmware, and drivers, accompanied by numerous restarts. The infamous progress bar, a long-standing source of user irritation, continued its legacy of misleading users, often stalling at 65 percent for an hour before racing to 98 percent in mere seconds, only to hang there indefinitely.
This enduring behavior is disheartening, especially considering that Windows is one of the most widely used operating systems globally. The experience underscores a critical issue that Microsoft and other tech vendors must confront. While it is commendable that there is a growing focus on code efficiency, the incessant stream of updates reflects a troubling “we can fix it later” mentality prevalent in the tech industry.
Years ago, a leader of a DevOps project expressed confusion when I inquired about pre-release testing and validation. He believed that unit testing was adequate, and modern development practices allowed for swift updates if issues arose. However, this perspective assumes that customers are willing to endure frequent updates and the potential for hours of waiting if they delay their updates for an extended period.
The tech industry is gradually recognizing the necessity for greater efficiencies, and Microsoft appears to be leading this charge. However, it must also tackle the issue of overwhelming update cycles. While it is impressive to claim that software can operate on limited resources, such assertions lose their impact when users are faced with extensive update processes that can significantly delay their experience.
