I gave my Windows 11 apps a sharper look, here’s how you can do it too

Windows 11 has sparked discussions among users regarding its customization capabilities, with many feeling it falls short compared to its predecessors. However, there are ways to personalize the operating system through various hacks and third-party applications. These tools can enhance the aesthetic of your apps, allowing for subtle yet impactful changes.

How to add sharp corners to your Windows 11 apps

One of the notable design features of Windows 11 is its rounded corners, which many find visually appealing. Yet, for those who prefer a more traditional, square look, adjustments can be made. A third-party application named Mica For Everyone offers a straightforward solution to modify the corners of your apps. Here’s a simple guide to get started:

  1. Download and install Mica For Everyone from GitHub.
  2. Launch the application.
  3. Select Global Rule.
  4. Locate the Corner Mode drop-down menu under Style.
  5. Choose Square from the options provided.

Before proceeding, ensure that your system has .NET Core 3.1 and Visual C++ Runtime installed, as these are prerequisites for the application to function correctly.

By following these steps, you can transform the appearance of your app windows from rounded to square corners, creating a more professional aesthetic. It’s important to note that this global setting will affect all apps on your system. If you wish to exclude specific applications, such as Spotify, you can easily add exceptions by clicking the + button in the lower-left corner of the interface.

The application also allows for direct modifications to specific system components like Paint, File Explorer, Command Prompt, and PowerShell without the need for additional rules. Beyond corner adjustments, Mica For Everyone offers a variety of customization options to give Windows 11 a unique flair.

What else can you do with the app?

In addition to altering window corners, Mica For Everyone provides options to change the color of title bars across different applications. Users can select from System, Light, and Dark themes. For those looking to replicate the Windows 10 aesthetic, an Acrylic backdrop effect can be applied by selecting the Acrylic option in the Backdrop Type menu. Keep in mind that certain visual effects, such as translucency and blurring, may require a restart of the affected application to take effect.

Mica For Everyone also supports Windows 10 PCs

For users still operating on Windows 10, Mica For Everyone remains a viable tool for enhancing the appearance of app windows, filling a gap left by the built-in customization options. However, compatibility may vary, so it’s advisable to consult the app’s wiki page for specific functionalities available on different versions of Windows 10.

It can’t do everything

While Mica For Everyone offers a range of customization features, it does have its limitations. Notably, it cannot modify the corners of the Start menu or Notification bar, nor can it apply visual effects to these system components. For those interested in further customization of the Start menu and other system elements, exploring additional third-party tools like Start11 and StartAllBack may be necessary.
