Infamous BSOD appears across Windows machines globally as suspected security bug grounds planes, hits health services

CrowdStrike Bug Causes Global System Outages

An issue affecting systems running Windows and CrowdStrike security software has caused chaos for various industries, including airlines, train companies, and emergency services. The bug has led to repeated restarts and the dreaded blue screen of death (BSOD).

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue, stating that virtual machines running Windows with the CrowdStrike Falcon agent may encounter the BSOD and get stuck in a restarting loop. They are currently investigating potential mitigation options for Azure customers.

The problem seems to stem from CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor agent, a key component of its security platform. CrowdStrike has since identified and deployed a fix for the issue, but the impact is still being felt worldwide.

Major organizations like UK news broadcaster Sky News and airline KLM have experienced outages, with some still working to restore services. Other airlines, airports, and banks have also reported disruptions, causing inconvenience for passengers and staff.

Despite the widespread impact, CrowdStrike assures that this is not a security incident or cyberattack, but rather a technical fault with a content update for Windows hosts. Resolving the issue may take time, as troubleshooting and updating systems stuck in boot loops can be a challenging task.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is facing a separate issue with Microsoft 365 services, impacting some users’ access to apps and services. However, this problem is attributed to internal issues within Microsoft’s own infrastructure.
