It’s the year of Linux… at least for Denmark — here’s why the country’s government is dumping Windows and Office 365

Denmark’s Ministry of Digital Affairs is embarking on a significant transition, signaling a decisive shift away from Microsoft services, including the widely used Windows and Office 365. As reported by Politiken, the ministry has set its sights on adopting Linux and LibreOffice as its new software solutions.

The Migration Timeline

This migration will be implemented gradually, with half of the ministry’s staff expected to make the switch to LibreOffice and Linux between June and August. The remaining employees are slated to follow suit in the subsequent months, from September to November. This strategic move reflects a growing trend towards digital independence and sovereignty.

Concerns Over Digital Sovereignty

Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital and largest city, has already initiated plans to sever ties with Microsoft services. The Copenhagen Audit Committee has underscored the importance of maintaining digital sovereignty, expressing concerns about potential disruptions in communication. “If we suddenly can’t send emails or communicate internally because of a political fallout, that’s a huge problem,” remarked a committee member, highlighting the critical nature of this transition.

Aarhus Joins the Movement

Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, is also taking steps to achieve independence from Microsoft. Reports indicate that both major cities are aligning their strategies to reduce reliance on Microsoft software, further emphasizing a collective shift within the country.

Backup Plans in Place

In anticipation of potential challenges during the migration process, the ministry has devised a backup plan. Stage Olsen, a representative from the ministry, stated, “If phasing out proves to be too complicated, we can revert back to Microsoft in an instant.” This contingency plan ensures that the ministry can maintain operational continuity while navigating this significant change.
