Microsoft has recently advised its customers to overlook certain erroneous Windows Firewall notifications that may arise following the installation of the June 2025 preview update. These alerts, identified in the Event Viewer as ‘Event 2042,’ indicate a ‘Config Read Failed’ warning accompanied by a ‘More data is available’ message.
Details on the Issue
The tech giant clarified that this known issue stems from a new feature currently under development, which has not yet been fully integrated into the operating system. In a statement on the Windows release health dashboard, Microsoft reassured users, stating, “Following installation of the June 2025 Windows non-security preview update (KB5060829), security event logs might include an error event related to Windows Firewall With Advanced Security, which can be safely ignored.”
Furthermore, the company emphasized that the Windows Firewall is expected to operate normally, and no action is necessary to mitigate or resolve this error event. The notifications will only manifest on Windows 11 24H2 systems, yet they are not anticipated to disrupt any associated Windows processes.
Ongoing Efforts and Historical Context
Microsoft is actively working on a resolution for this known issue and plans to provide updates as more information becomes available. This situation is reminiscent of previous challenges faced by the company, where similar issues have led to erroneous warnings without any real impact on system functionality.
For instance, in April, Microsoft addressed a bug that resulted in incorrect BitLocker drive encryption errors on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices due to a reporting issue. The company acknowledged this problem in October, clarifying that it only affected managed Windows environments where drive encryption was enforced for the operating system and fixed drives.
Additionally, the same month saw Microsoft confirming and rectifying another known issue that triggered invalid 0x80070643 failure errors following the installation of the April 2025 Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates.
As the landscape of technology continues to evolve, Microsoft remains committed to ensuring the reliability and security of its operating systems, even as it navigates the complexities of integrating new features.
