Microsoft has found itself in the position of needing to step in once more due to complications arising from the Windows 11 24H2 update. The latest challenge comes from an incompatible driver, sprotect.sys, developed by SenseShield Technology, which has been linked to significant issues for users following the update.
The driver in question is designed to provide encryption protection and is utilized by various specialized security software and enterprise solutions. Microsoft notes that this driver can be automatically integrated into a system during the installation of numerous applications, including antivirus programs.
In more severe instances, the compatibility issues stemming from the Windows 11 24H2 update can manifest as an uptick in blue screen errors or black screen crashes. When a system becomes unresponsive, users may find that only onboard resources or repair tools can assist with troubleshooting efforts.
What you need to watch out for
Microsoft has identified that the issue predominantly affects sprotect.sys drivers with specific version numbers: 1.0.2.372 and 1.0.3.48903. System administrators are advised to verify whether these drivers are present on their devices. As previously mentioned, these drivers can be installed and updated through various applications, and currently, there is no exhaustive list available.
To mitigate the impact on affected devices, Microsoft has implemented an update block, designated with ID number 56318982. This measure ensures that systems impacted by the incompatible driver will not receive the Windows 11 24H2 update via Windows Update.
In collaboration with SenseShield Technology, Microsoft is actively working towards a resolution to address these issues and restore update eligibility for affected users. Given the frequency of such update blocks in recent times, Microsoft is likely well-versed in navigating these challenges.
