Microsoft Confirms New Update Failure For Windows Users

Hot on the heels of its recent emergency update, Microsoft finds itself once again addressing a significant issue with its Windows operating systems. Following a problematic mandatory security update earlier this month, the tech giant has confirmed another setback, stating, “we are investigating this issue and will provide more information when it is available.”

Windows 11 Faces New Challenges

This time, the spotlight is on Windows 11, as users of versions 22H2 and 23H2 report complications with the May 13, 2025 security update (KB5058405). Microsoft has acknowledged these concerns, indicating that some devices are experiencing installation failures.

The company has cautioned users about a specific recovery error that reads: “Your PC/Device needs to be repaired. The operating system couldn’t be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.” This issue is linked to the ACPI.sys driver, which is essential for managing hardware resources and power states within the Windows environment. The error code associated with this problem is 0xc0000098.

While the ACPI.sys file is a critical component, Microsoft has noted that similar errors may arise from different file names, primarily impacting enterprise users. The ramifications of this issue extend beyond personal computers, as it predominantly affects virtual environments, including Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Virtual Desktop, and on-premises virtual machines hosted on Citrix or Hyper-V.

Earlier this month, Microsoft had to respond to reports from Windows 10 users encountering BitLocker Recovery screens during the installation of May’s security update. The company issued an out-of-band update to address these concerns, warning that “Windows 10 might repeatedly display the BitLocker recovery screen at startup.”

As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain how widespread the current issue with Windows 11 will become and whether it could escalate further. Notably, Microsoft has already released the KB5061977 out-of-band update for Windows 11 this month, indicating a proactive approach to resolving these ongoing challenges.
