Microsoft delays rollout of the Windows 11 Recall feature yet again

In a recent statement to The Verge, Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager for Microsoft Windows Insider, emphasized the company’s dedication to providing a secure and trustworthy experience with its upcoming feature, Recall. He noted, “We are committed to delivering a secure and trusted experience with Recall. To ensure we deliver on these important updates, we’re taking additional time to refine the experience before previewing it with Windows Insiders.”

Details on Recall’s Security Measures

While LeBlanc refrained from disclosing specific reasons for the delay of Recall or introducing new security measures, he did reference a September blog post that outlined the protective measures in place. These include the use of Windows’ Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) features and Windows Hello authentication, both designed to enhance user data protection.

Importantly, Recall will be opt-in by default, allowing users the flexibility to choose whether or not to utilize the feature. Additionally, it will be fully removable for those who prefer not to engage with it.

System Requirements for Recall

As Recall prepares for its eventual rollout, it is essential to note that it will require a Copilot+ PC. This advanced configuration will support several AI-related features that are not available on standard Windows 11 machines. To qualify as a Copilot+ PC, devices must meet the following criteria:

  • At least 16GB of RAM
  • A minimum of 256GB of storage
  • A neural processing unit (NPU) capable of performing at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS)

Furthermore, users will need to enroll their PCs in the Windows Insider Program to access Recall. As for the timeline regarding when non-Windows Insider PCs might receive Recall, speculation suggests that it may not occur until 2025, leaving many eager users anticipating further developments.
