In a recent communication via its Microsoft Support account on X, the tech giant acknowledged the memory-intensive nature of Windows 11 and the ongoing development of tools aimed at optimizing resource usage. The message was clear: “too many startup apps can slow you down,” prompting users to evaluate and disable unnecessary applications that launch upon sign-in.
Optimizing Startup Performance
To streamline the boot process, users can easily disable startup apps by navigating to Settings, selecting Apps, and then Startup. Here, they can toggle off any programs that are not essential for immediate use. For those seeking more detailed insights, Microsoft recommends utilizing the Task Manager. This can be accessed by right-clicking the Start button or by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
Within the Startup apps section of Task Manager, users will find a comprehensive list of applications that launch automatically, along with their enabled status and a “Startup impact” rating. Microsoft categorizes the impact as follows:
- Low: Less than 300 milliseconds of CPU time and less than 292 KB of disk activity.
- Medium: CPU time between 300 milliseconds and one second, or disk usage between 292 KB and 3 MB.
- High: CPU usage exceeding one second or disk activity surpassing 3 MB.
It is important to note that while high-impact apps may seem like prime candidates for disabling, users should exercise caution. Certain applications, particularly those related to security, monitoring, or drivers, may be critical immediately after sign-in. Disabling a startup app does not result in its uninstallation, allowing users the flexibility to re-enable it later if needed.

By entering shell:appsfolder in the Run dialog, users can access installed applications, while shell:startup opens the current user’s Startup folder for easy drag-and-drop shortcuts.
