Microsoft fixes Windows 11 audio issues confirmed in December

Microsoft has taken a significant step by lifting the safeguard hold that previously restricted certain users from upgrading to Windows 11 24H2. This decision comes after addressing compatibility issues that had been causing disruptions with Bluetooth headsets and speakers.

Addressing Compatibility Challenges

The company first acknowledged the existence of this bug back in December, noting that it primarily affected systems utilizing Dirac audio improvement software. Users reported various audio-related malfunctions, including problems with device detection and the failure of integrated speakers to function properly.

According to Microsoft, “The incompatibility relates to the software component cridspapo.dll, which is part of these devices’ audio processing software.” Following the installation of Windows 11, version 24H2, many users found that their integrated speakers, Bluetooth speakers, and Bluetooth headsets were no longer recognized by both first-party and third-party applications.

On Friday, nearly nine months after the initial bug confirmation, Microsoft announced the removal of the update block for Windows 24H2 on devices equipped with Dirac audio software. While users may experience a delay before the upgrade becomes available, a simple device restart could expedite the process.

In a statement, the company mentioned, “A new version of the driver has been made available via Windows Update, which addresses this issue. We recommend you install the latest security update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.”

The safeguard hold was officially lifted on September 11, 2025. Devices that do not face any other safeguard restrictions are now eligible to install Windows 11, version 24H2 through the Windows Update release channel.

Initially released to eligible devices running Windows 11 22H2/23H2 in October, Windows 11 24H2 had its first rollout in May 2024 for enterprise testing with customers in the Windows Insider Release Preview Channel.

Despite the lifting of this particular safeguard hold, it is worth noting that upgrades to Windows 11 24H2 remain blocked for devices with incompatible Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) audio drivers, SenseShield Technology code-obfuscation drivers, wallpaper customization software, and integrated cameras.
