Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting users of Windows 11 24H2, specifically impacting the functionality of Outlook. This problem has been highlighted in the Release Health Dashboard and is particularly relevant for those utilizing Google Workspace Sync, a tool designed to facilitate the management of Google Workspace data—including emails, calendar entries, and tasks—within Outlook.
Details of the Outlook Issue
Users experiencing this issue may find that Outlook fails to launch altogether. Furthermore, attempts to uninstall or reinstall Google Workspace Sync for Microsoft Outlook (GWSMO) may be unsuccessful. An error message typically encountered reads: “Cannot Start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot Open the Outlook Window. The set of folders cannot be opened. An unexpected error has occurred. MAPI was unable to load the information service.”
To address this, Microsoft has indicated that the latest version of Google Workspace Sync—4.3.68.0—resolves the issue. However, until users install this update, a compatibility hold will be enforced, preventing the rollout of Windows 11 24H2. Recently, Microsoft announced an expansion of this operating system update.
For users still facing the hold after 48 hours of updating the application, Microsoft advises reaching out to Google Workspace Support for assistance.
Transition to New Outlook
In a separate but related announcement, Microsoft has revealed that the transition from Outlook Classic to the new Outlook for Microsoft 365 Enterprise users is set to commence in April 2026. This change will allow users to experience the modern interface and features of the New Outlook while retaining the option to revert to the Classic version if necessary.
Microsoft emphasizes that the New Outlook introduces a host of innovative features, including Copilot capabilities, customizable theming, and various time-saving tools such as mail pinning and snoozing. The rollout will primarily affect Microsoft 365 Enterprise licensees, although it can be paused through administrative policies to hide the toggle. Notably, this transition does not apply to perpetual licenses or on-premises accounts.
To facilitate a smooth transition, Microsoft has committed to providing at least 12 months’ notice regarding any changes, ensuring that customers have ample time to prepare for the upcoming updates. The shift towards the New Outlook is clearly on the horizon, marking a significant evolution in Microsoft’s productivity suite.
