Microsoft is finally ready to ship Windows Recall after almost year long delay
Windows Recall Poised for Launch on Copilot+ PCs
Microsoft’s much-anticipated Recall app is nearing its official release, following an extensive testing period that has spanned nearly a year. Now positioned within the Windows 11 Release Preview channel, this feature is on the cusp of becoming widely available. Industry insiders suggest that a rollout could commence as early as May, aligning perfectly with the app’s recent transition into this final testing phase.
The Recall feature, designed to capture and store snapshots of user activities on a PC, promises to enhance productivity by allowing users to revisit previously accessed content. Initially slated for a June 2024 launch alongside Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs, the timeline has shifted due to delays that have affected the exclusivity of the feature. As it stands, all Copilot+ PCs are expected to receive Windows Recall simultaneously in early 2025, with an anticipated debut in the coming weeks.

Despite its impending general availability, Windows Recall may still carry a “preview” label at launch. The duration of this designation remains uncertain, although the feature has reached a level of polish that suggests readiness for broader use. Its initial delay stemmed from privacy and security concerns, prompting Microsoft to enhance the app’s security measures. The latest iteration of Recall includes robust encryption, ensuring that only the user can access the collected data.
Microsoft has outlined comprehensive security protocols for Windows Recall, which employs Windows Enhanced Sign-In Security. This system mandates both a Microsoft Account and Windows Hello Bio-authentication for setup and usage, reinforcing user confidence in the feature’s safety. Importantly, Recall is entirely optional; users can disable or uninstall it if they prefer not to utilize its capabilities.
Having tested Recall since November, I can attest to its utility as a valuable tool for enhancing workflow. In addition to the Recall rollout, rumors suggest that Microsoft may unveil two new, smaller Surface PCs equipped with Copilot+ capabilities next month, contingent on tariff considerations. These devices could potentially be among the first to launch with Windows Recall pre-installed.
As the initial controversies surrounding Recall have subsided and the app has demonstrated its security, interest in its upcoming release is likely to grow. Will you be eager to explore this feature once it becomes available? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
