Microsoft is officially killing Windows Mail and Calendar by year’s end

In a significant shift for users of its software, Microsoft has announced that the Windows Mail, Calendar, and People applications will cease to receive support after December 31, 2024. While users will still be able to access these applications, functionalities such as sending and receiving emails or scheduling appointments will no longer be available post-deadline.

What is the deadline?

The timeline for the classic Outlook app is somewhat different, as it is set to be deprecated over a longer period. Microsoft has been proactive in notifying users through pop-ups about the transition to the new Outlook, but the duration of the grace period had remained somewhat ambiguous until now.

What you can do right now

For those still utilizing Windows Mail, Calendar, People, or classic Outlook, expect to encounter notifications prompting you to transition to the new Outlook app. Users have two primary choices: they can either embrace the new Outlook or continue using their current applications for the time being. However, opting to delay the switch will result in persistent reminders until the end of the year.

After December 31, 2024, users will be required to adopt the new Outlook app or seek alternatives among third-party email and calendar solutions. The new Outlook app is readily available in the Microsoft Store under the name “Outlook for Windows.”

How to transfer your data

Microsoft facilitates a seamless transition by allowing users to export their data and emails directly to the new Outlook app. This process is designed to occur automatically upon accepting the switch, providing a straightforward path for users.

Alternatively, users can manually export their emails and contacts from Windows Mail, Calendar, and People, followed by a manual import into the new Outlook app. Detailed instructions for this process are available in Microsoft’s support documentation.

Microsoft emphasizes that the new Outlook app offers enhanced features and improved security compared to its predecessors. However, the ultimate satisfaction of users with this transition remains to be seen.
