In a swift response to user concerns, Microsoft has rolled out an emergency out-of-band update, KB5062170, addressing issues stemming from its recent security patch. This marks the second such intervention in a fortnight, underscoring the company’s commitment to maintaining system integrity.
Details of the Update
The company previously acknowledged challenges with the May 13, 2025 Windows security update (KB5058405), which reportedly failed to install on certain devices running Windows 11, versions 22H2 and 23H2. Users encountering this problem received notifications indicating that “your PC/Device needs to be repaired,” accompanied by the error code 0xc0000098, signaling missing or corrupt files.
The newly released update, KB5062170, is now accessible via the Update Catalog. It specifically addresses an issue related to the ACPI.sys driver, a crucial component that allows Windows to efficiently manage hardware resources and power states. Microsoft has cautioned users that similar errors may arise with different file names, suggesting a broader scope of potential issues.
Impact on Users
This situation predominantly affects enterprise environments, particularly virtual setups such as Azure Virtual Machines and Azure Virtual Desktop, as well as on-premises virtual machines hosted on platforms like Citrix or Hyper-V. Home users are less likely to be impacted by this specific update.
Interestingly, this latest fix for Windows 11 users comes in the wake of a previous emergency update that primarily affected Windows 10 users, which led to widespread occurrences of the BitLocker Recovery screen at startup. Microsoft had warned users of this issue, emphasizing the need for timely resolutions.
Installation Guidance
Microsoft assures that the new out-of-band update encompasses all enhancements and fixes included in the May 2025 Windows non-security preview update, in addition to resolving the current issue. As a cumulative update, KB5062170 supersedes all prior updates for the affected versions, eliminating the need for previous installations. Users are advised that a device restart will be necessary post-installation to complete the update process.
