Microsoft has recently removed a compatibility barrier that was hindering upgrades to Windows 11 24H2, following the resolution of a bug that affected USB connections for certain scanners.
Details of the Issue
Two weeks ago, the tech giant acknowledged the problem after numerous users reported connection difficulties on platforms such as Reddit and Microsoft’s community forums. The root of the issue was identified as a failure of some devices to transition from eSCL (eScanner Communication Language) to USB mode, which is essential for proper driver matching.
To mitigate the impact on users attempting to upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft implemented a safeguard hold and recommended that users refrain from manually updating via the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the Media Creation Tool until the issue was resolved.
- Standalone scanners
- Multi-function printers
- Fax machines
- Modems
- Other eSCL network devices
These devices were listed among those affected by the compatibility issue.
On Tuesday, Microsoft addressed the problem with the release of the KB5048667 cumulative update during this month’s Patch Tuesday, which applies to all editions of Windows 11, version 24H2.
In a statement on the Windows release health dashboard, the company emphasized, “We recommend you install the latest security update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.” They also indicated that the safeguard hold (ID 54762729) would be lifted in the coming days.
However, users may experience a delay of up to 48 hours after installing KB5048667 before they receive the Windows 11, version 24H2 update. For those eager to expedite the process, a simple device restart may facilitate a quicker upgrade.
In addition to this, Microsoft has recently imposed a safeguard hold on devices using incompatible Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) audio drivers, which have been linked to blue screen of death (BSOD) issues. Furthermore, it was announced over the weekend that upgrades are currently blocked on systems with outdated Google Workspace Sync installations, which have been causing problems with launching Outlook and generating “Cannot Start Microsoft Outlook” errors.
