Starting this week, Microsoft has initiated a forceful transition for unmanaged devices operating on Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions, upgrading them to the latest Windows 11 25H2 version. This strategic move aligns with the company’s commitment to maintaining a secure and efficient operating environment.
Understanding the Upgrade Timeline
According to Microsoft’s Lifecycle Policy site, support for Windows 11 24H2 is set to conclude in approximately six months, specifically on October 13, 2026. This impending deadline underscores the importance of the upgrade for users still on the older version.
Referred to as the Windows 11 2025 Update, the 25H2 version began its rollout in September, targeting eligible Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. The update is delivered through enablement packages, which are notably compact, each under 200 KB in size.
In a recent update to the Windows release health dashboard, Microsoft stated, “The machine learning-based intelligent rollout has expanded to all devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, version 24H2 that are not managed by IT departments.” This indicates a broadening of the update’s reach, ensuring that users benefit from the latest features and security enhancements.
As part of this transition, Microsoft emphasized that devices operating on these editions will cease to receive critical updates, including fixes for known issues, time zone adjustments, technical support, and monthly security updates designed to protect against emerging threats. The company reassured users that the upgrade to Windows 11, version 25H2 will occur automatically when the device is ready, allowing users the flexibility to choose when to restart or postpone the update.
Options for Users
For those eager to expedite the upgrade process, a manual check for the update can be performed by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and selecting the option to download and install Windows 11 25H2. Alternatively, users who prefer to delay the upgrade can pause updates through the same settings menu, selecting a duration for the postponement. However, it is essential to note that updates must be installed once the pause period expires.
To assist users during the upgrade process, Microsoft has made available a support document along with a step-by-step guide aimed at resolving any issues that may arise during the transition to Windows 11 25H2.
In recent months, Microsoft has also been proactive in addressing various issues. Following the March 2026 Patch Tuesday updates, the company released several emergency updates, including one that rectified a sign-in issue affecting Microsoft accounts across multiple applications such as Teams and OneDrive. Additionally, out-of-band updates were issued for hotpatch-enabled Windows 11 Enterprise devices, addressing a Bluetooth visibility issue and security vulnerabilities in the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) management tool.
