Microsoft Releases New Builds to All Four Windows Insider Preview Channels

Microsoft has made a notable move by releasing new Windows 11 builds across all four Windows Insider Preview channels, marking a significant moment as the Windows 11 version 25H2 makes its debut in the Release Preview channel. While such occurrences are not entirely unheard of, they certainly pique interest among users and developers alike.

Windows 11 version 25H2 in the Release Preview channel

The introduction of Windows 11 version 25H2 in the Release Preview channel signals a return to the traditional release schedule for Windows 11. Users can now download a near-final version of this operating system through the Release Preview channel. Unlike typical cumulative updates, this release comes as an enablement package (eKB), sharing its servicing branch with version 24H2.

To access this update, users need to enroll a PC in the Release Preview channel, check for updates via Windows Update, and select “Download & install” next to the notification for Windows 11 version 25H2. Once installed, users will continue to receive monthly cumulative updates as usual. Given that 25H2 and 24H2 are functionally identical, the transition should be seamless for most users.

It’s worth noting that Windows 11 version 25H2 will not include Windows PowerShell 2.0 or Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC), both of which are being phased out. Microsoft has also announced that ISOs for Windows 11 version 25H2 will be available for download next week.

Dev and Beta channels

For those enrolled in the Dev or Beta channels, similar functional updates are rolling out through different cumulative updates. The Dev channel is receiving KB5064093, which updates Windows 11 version 25H2 to build 26220.5770, while the Beta channel is getting KB5064089, updating Windows 11 version 24H2 to build 26120.5770. The alignment of build numbers is a welcome change for many users.

Among the new features introduced in these updates are:

  • New Microsoft 365 text action in Click to Do: This feature enhances table recognition across various applications, allowing users to convert tables to Excel seamlessly. Currently, it is available only on Snapdragon X-based Copilot+ PCs, with plans for broader compatibility soon.
  • Live Persona Cards from Microsoft 365 in Click to Do: This text action identifies email addresses and displays Live Persona Cards from Microsoft 365, provided users are signed in with a Work or school account and have a Microsoft 365 subscription.
  • Braille viewer in Narrator: Aimed at educators and developers, this feature provides on-screen textual and Braille representations of text, enhancing accessibility for users with visual impairments.
  • Windows Share improvements: The update introduces a “Find apps” option under “Share using,” which lists compatible applications available on the PC and in the Microsoft Store.
  • Various fixes: These builds also address multiple issues related to the Taskbar, system tray, Explorer, HDR, audio, and more.

However, as with any Insider build, there are known issues, including a recurring audio problem that may affect some users. Microsoft has provided guidance on workarounds for these issues, although some may resolve themselves over time.

Canary

In a more enigmatic development, Microsoft has released Windows 11 build 27934 to the Canary channel, though its purpose remains somewhat unclear. This update primarily consists of general improvements and bug fixes, with a host of known issues still present.

As the updates roll out just before a long holiday weekend, users are left with a mix of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead in their Windows experience.
