Microsoft has initiated the rollout of its Windows 11 2024 update, designated as version 24H2, which introduces a series of enhancements aimed at refining user experience across various components of the operating system. This update encompasses notable modifications to the Start menu, File Explorer, Settings, and more.
Enhancements to the Start Menu
One of the standout features of this update is the revamped Start menu, particularly beneficial for users of Microsoft’s Phone Link software. A new side panel has been integrated, offering users real-time insights into their phone’s battery status and notifications, alongside quick access to messages, calls, and photos. This floating panel serves as a practical addition for those who rely on Phone Link.
File Explorer Improvements
File Explorer has also undergone a transformation, with a redesigned home section that consolidates recent, favorites, and shared files into a convenient tabbed view. The context menus have been enhanced, making common actions such as copy, paste, and rename more accessible with larger, clearly labeled options. Additionally, users can now create 7z and TAR files directly within File Explorer.
System Tray and Quick Settings Overhaul
In the system tray, Microsoft has simplified the time and date interface, eliminating the year for a cleaner look. Quick Settings has been overhauled to display all quick actions by default, allowing users to drag and drop them as needed. Furthermore, a new Energy Saver mode has been introduced to help extend battery life on laptops, along with customizable power options that let users define actions for the power button and laptop lid.
Settings Interface Enhancements
The Settings interface has seen significant improvements, including the long-awaited ability to reverse the mouse scroll wheel direction without delving into the Windows registry. Users can now toggle enhanced pointer precision directly from the Settings menu, streamlining the process. Developers will also appreciate the inclusion of the ‘sudo’ command, enabling them to run elevated tools from an unelevated console session, a feature borrowed from Unix-based operating systems.
Unified Microsoft Teams and Outlook Client
Among other changes, the update brings a unified version of the Microsoft Teams app, catering to both professional and personal accounts. Additionally, the Mail and Calendar applications have been replaced with a new Outlook client, while the Copilot app has transitioned into a web application, no longer directly interacting with Windows 11 settings.
Support for New Technologies
The Windows 11 2024 update also introduces support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth LE audio, alongside performance enhancements for the latest AMD desktop CPUs. Microsoft is adopting a phased approach to the rollout of version 24H2, ensuring that devices are fully compatible before the update is offered. John Cable, vice president of program management for Windows servicing and delivery, stated, “The first phase will start over the coming weeks, beginning with eligible devices running Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2 for those who have previously opted in to be amongst the first to experience new enhancements.”
This update marks a departure from previous practices, as Microsoft is utilizing the OS swap method for 24H2, replacing the entire operating system rather than implementing a service update. This strategy aims to mitigate potential application or device driver incompatibilities, ensuring a smoother upgrade experience for users.
