Microsoft: Windows 11 24H2 updates fail with 0x80240069 errors

Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting enterprise users attempting to upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This complication arises after the installation of the April 2025 security updates, specifically the monthly security update released on April 8, 2025, identified as KB5055528.

Understanding the WSUS Challenge

WSUS, originally introduced as Software Update Services (SUS) nearly two decades ago, serves as a vital tool for IT administrators. It allows for the management of updates across extensive enterprise networks from a centralized server, enabling actions such as deferring, approving, and scheduling updates without relying on individual endpoints to connect to Microsoft’s servers.

However, affected users are encountering difficulties, as systems running Windows 11 23H2 or Windows 11 22H2 are generating Windows Update Service (wuauserv) errors, specifically with the error code 0x80240069. The company confirmed this issue following numerous reports from users across various online platforms, including Reddit and its own community forums.

Microsoft’s official statement regarding this situation clarifies that “devices which have installed the April Windows monthly security update might be unable to update to Windows 11 24H2 via WSUS.” The company elaborated that the download process for Windows 11 24H2 may not initiate or complete, with the Windows update logs reflecting the aforementioned error code and potentially indicating that “Service wuauserv has unexpectedly stopped.”

Interestingly, home users are generally insulated from these update challenges, as WSUS is predominantly utilized in business and enterprise settings.

Recent Developments and Future Directions

In a related development, Microsoft announced in September 2024 that WSUS had been deprecated, although the company reassured users that it would continue to support existing functionalities and publish updates through this channel. This announcement followed WSUS being listed in August 2024 as one of the features that would no longer be developed starting with Windows Server 2025.

Earlier this month, Microsoft also indicated that it would postpone the removal of WSUS driver synchronization indefinitely based on customer feedback, despite having issued three warnings over the past year regarding the feature’s planned removal on April 18, 2025.

In addition to addressing the WSUS update issues, Microsoft is actively working to resolve a “latent code issue” that has led to some devices being upgraded to Windows 11 despite existing Intune policies designed to prevent such upgrades. This situation is not unprecedented, as Microsoft had previously confirmed in November 2024 that certain devices running Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2022 were upgraded to Windows Server 2025 without prior notification.
