Microsoft Adjusts Course on Copilot App Installation

In a notable shift, Microsoft has opted against the automatic installation of its Microsoft 365 Copilot App on Windows 11 by default, a decision influenced by considerable user feedback. What was once perceived as a bold step forward in AI integration has been tempered by a vocal segment of power users and enthusiasts who have expressed their resistance to the company’s “Copilot everywhere” strategy.

According to a recent update on the Admin 365 dashboard, Microsoft has announced, “Automatic installation of the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices with Microsoft 365 desktop apps, planned for December 2025, is temporarily disabled. Existing installations remain unaffected. Admins can deploy the app via other methods and should await further updates.”

For those who may not be familiar, the Microsoft 365 Copilot App is the rebranded iteration of what was previously known as the Microsoft 365 / Office Hub. This revamped app was introduced alongside the regular Copilot app on Windows 11 systems. Initially, in September 2025, Microsoft had intended to automatically install both the Microsoft 365 Copilot App and the regular Copilot App, effectively delivering two AI-enhanced applications to users without their consent.

This proposed move ignited a wave of backlash from the community, particularly among tech enthusiasts who found little to no value in the AI enhancements being pushed by Microsoft. Users voiced their preferences, making it clear that they desired the option to opt-in rather than being subjected to automatic installations.

In response to the feedback, Microsoft has reiterated its commitment to focusing on what truly matters to consumers. The company is prioritizing the resolution of existing bugs within the operating system and enhancing core features to ensure a smoother user experience in Windows 11. Furthermore, Microsoft has indicated a strategic retreat from its previous “AI-everywhere” approach, signaling a willingness to adapt to user preferences and concerns.
