Microsoft’s new Windows 11 update comes with energy use and Wi-Fi enhancements

Microsoft has announced the initiation of a significant update for its Windows 11 operating system, a move that reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing user experience and functionality. This update, known as the Windows 11 2024 Update or version 24H2, is designed to improve essential PC operations, including file downloads, document compression, and energy management.

Despite Windows contributing only 9% to Microsoft’s impressive 5 billion revenue for fiscal 2024, the operating system remains a cornerstone of the company’s strategy. The profitability of Windows, coupled with its extensive user base, plays a crucial role in driving clients towards Microsoft’s Azure cloud services. As support for the widely used Windows 10 is set to conclude in October 2025, Microsoft continues to innovate and enhance Windows 11, which has seen a remarkable 50% increase in active devices year over year since its launch in 2021, according to CEO Satya Nadella.

New Features in Version 24H2

The upcoming update introduces a variety of features aimed at improving user experience:

  • Enhanced Energy Controls: Users will have the ability to minimize power consumption even when their PC is plugged in, regardless of battery presence.
  • Advanced Hearing Aid Connectivity: Bluetooth LE Audio-compatible hearing aids can now connect directly to PCs, allowing users to stream audio and adjust settings seamlessly.
  • Faster Internet Access: With the introduction of Wi-Fi 7 routers, users can expect higher data throughput, enhancing download speeds and supporting multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Streamlined Wi-Fi Sharing: A new QR code feature in the Settings app simplifies the process of connecting other devices to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Rich Backgrounds: Users with HDR-capable displays can select .JXR image files for their desktop backgrounds, resulting in striking visual contrasts.
  • Mobile File Management: Connecting a phone via Bluetooth allows users to access mobile files directly within the File Explorer app, eliminating the need for USB connections.
  • Compact Clock Display: A new option in the Settings app enables users to minimize the space taken up by the clock in the System tray.
  • File Compression Options: Users can now compress files directly in File Explorer without needing third-party software, offering formats such as ZIP, 7z, or TAR.

To access the new features, users can navigate to the Settings app and select Windows Update. The update will be rolled out gradually, initially targeting devices running versions 22H2 and 23H2 that have opted for immediate updates.
