New AI experiences for Paint and Notepad begin rolling out to Windows Insiders

Hello Windows Insiders. Today marks the beginning of an exciting rollout of updates to Paint and Notepad for users in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11.

Paint (version 11.2410.28.0)

Generative Fill

This update introduces generative fill, a dynamic tool designed to enhance your creative journey. This feature allows you to make edits and additions with just a few words, all while preserving the unique style of your artwork. Whether you are a professional artist seeking to add intricate details or a casual creator exploring new concepts, generative fill empowers you to refine your digital creations. It offers just the right amount of AI assistance, ensuring you remain in command of your artistic output.

To begin, utilize the Selection tool in the Paint toolbar to create either a rectangular or free-form selection. Once you’ve made your choice, a small menu will appear anchored to your selection. Click on the Generative fill option, describe your desired addition in the text box, and hit Create. If the result isn’t to your liking, simply press Try again. You can also adjust your selection or text prompt as needed. Navigate through the generated options using the arrow buttons, and when you find one that resonates with you, click Keep to apply it to your canvas.

Generative fill will initially be available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. To access this feature, you must sign in with your Microsoft account. Availability is limited to Windows Insiders in supported markets, which may vary by region.

Generative Erase

Alongside generative fill, we are excited to unveil generative erase, an innovative AI-driven tool that enables you to effortlessly remove unwanted objects from your canvas. This feature seamlessly fills the void left behind, creating the illusion that the object was never present.

To utilize this tool, select Generative erase from the left side of the canvas while using the eraser tool. With the generative erase brush, you can manually brush over areas you wish to remove. The options “Add area to erase” and “Reduce area to erase” allow you to fine-tune your selection. Once satisfied, click Apply to execute the removal. You can also specify an area for removal using rectangular or free-form selection tools in the small menu or right-click menu.

Generative erase is available for all Windows 11 PCs.

Update to Cocreator

This update also enhances the underlying diffusion-based model for Cocreator, delivering faster and improved results. With built-in moderation, Cocreator offers a reliable creative experience. This feature is available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.

Update to Image Creator

Last year, we introduced Image Creator in Paint as a preview, and we are thrilled to expand its availability to additional markets. Currently, Image Creator is accessible in preview for all Windows 11 users in the United States, France, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. To use this feature, you must sign in with your Microsoft account. Additionally, Microsoft 365 Personal and Family and Copilot Pro subscribers in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand can now utilize AI credits for Image Creator in Paint.

Notepad (version 11.2410.15.0)

The latest update to Notepad introduces the ability to rewrite content using generative AI. This feature allows you to rephrase sentences, adjust tone, and modify the length of your text according to your preferences.

To get started, select the text you wish to rewrite, right-click and choose the Rewrite option, or use the Ctrl + I keyboard shortcut. Notepad will generate three variations of the rewritten text for you to choose from. If you wish to refine the output further, you can customize the rewrite settings and click Retry for additional versions. Options to adjust content length and tone make it easy to tailor your writing for specific objectives. Previous versions are preserved in the dialog, allowing for easy reversion if necessary. If desired, you can disable the rewrite feature in the app settings.

Rewrite in Notepad is available in preview for users in the United States, France, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. A Microsoft account is required to use this feature. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family and Copilot Pro subscribers in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand can also utilize AI credits for the rewrite feature.

You can learn more about Rewrite in Notepad here.

Additionally, we have made strides in enhancing Notepad’s launch performance. Most users can expect an improvement of over 35% in app launch time, with some experiencing enhancements of 55% or more.
