Epic Games Unveils New Launcher in Preview
Epic Games has officially rolled out a preview version of its highly anticipated Epic Games Launcher for PC, marking a significant step forward in its digital ecosystem. This new launcher is not limited to Windows users; it also extends its reach to Mac and Linux platforms, with plans to introduce Easy Anti-Cheat and Fortnite to Linux users in the near future.
The Epic Games Store Team candidly acknowledges the challenges of programming, stating, “Programming is hard.” With this in mind, they have crafted a new Epic Games Launcher that promises enhanced speed and responsiveness compared to its predecessor. Described as a “speedboat” rather than a “yacht,” this initial release may be light on features but is packed with advanced digital commerce technology, including a shopping cart.
Among the notable enhancements in this new launcher are:
- Dramatically improved performance and lower resource usage
- Voice chat capabilities allowing friends to connect across Fortnite, the Epic Games Store, and the Epic Games app
- Revamped game landing pages featuring status updates, activity logs, details, and play controls
- Customizable options for the top bar, collections, library, and views
- A new download experience that provides detailed read and write speeds, among other improvements
In addition to the launcher’s features, Epic Games has announced that Fortnite will soon be available on Linux, accompanied by a restructured Easy Anti-Cheat system essential for the game’s functionality on this platform. The company elaborates on this development, stating, “We are rebuilding our Linux anti-cheat implementation into EAC Linux v2.” This new version aims to enhance security measures, bringing them closer in line with those on Windows systems. By utilizing existing Linux features such as signed kernel, signed kernel modules, and secure boot with attestation, Epic Games is working to ensure a seamless experience for players. The initiative also emphasizes collaboration with distribution maintainers to minimize the need for players to alter their setups in order to enjoy the game.
For those eager to explore the new features and improvements, the Epic Games Launcher is available for download on the Epic Games website.
