Microsoft’s Latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build Enhances Privacy Features
Microsoft has unveiled its latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build, 26120.3281 (KB5052086), aimed at both the Dev and Beta Channels. This update introduces a series of new features and adjustments that prioritize user privacy, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding personal data.
One of the most significant changes in this build is the removal of the Location History API. Previously utilized by Cortana to track device location over the past 24 hours, this feature has been phased out as Microsoft shifts its focus to Copilot, which does not require such data. As a result, Windows will no longer retain location data locally, although Microsoft has not clarified whether any cloud-based storage for location information will be implemented.
In addition to the changes surrounding location data, Microsoft has also taken steps to enhance privacy within File Explorer. The update eliminates “account-based content” from sections such as Recent, Favorites, Details, and Recommended. This adjustment specifically affects users of Entra ID, a cloud-based identity management solution that streamlines access for corporate users. The decision to remove user data from File Explorer aligns with the latest regulations in the European Economic Area, demonstrating Microsoft’s effort to comply with GDPR’s stringent privacy requirements. Notably, this modification is applicable only to customers located within the European Union.
Beyond privacy enhancements, the new Preview Build brings additional features that cater to user convenience. One notable improvement is the ability for users to effortlessly resume work on OneDrive documents when switching from a mobile device to a PC. Furthermore, the Recall feature has received updates, although it’s important to note that this will result in the deletion of all existing Recall snapshots.
As Microsoft continues to refine Windows 11 through these Insider builds, the tech community eagerly anticipates which features will transition into stable releases, shaping the future of the operating system.
