If you’ve ever found yourself frustrated with the limitations of traditional File Explorers, the emergence of alternative applications may be worth considering. Among the myriad options available, one standout contender is simply named Files. This application has been steadily evolving, and its latest update promises to enhance user experience significantly.
Files is getting a brand new Omnibar feature
The recent update, version 3.9.12, is now live on the preview branch, introducing an innovative feature known as the Omnibar. This new addition seamlessly combines the breadcrumb navigation path with the search functionality, creating a more streamlined user interface. However, the Omnibar offers much more than just a simple merger.
Here’s a closer look at the capabilities of the Omnibar:
- Breadcrumb Bar: The Omnibar prominently displays the current path in a familiar breadcrumb format. Users can easily expand these breadcrumbs to navigate through subfolders, thanks to an updated flyout design that includes folder icons. A new home button and flyout menu have also been added for quick access to frequently used folders.
- Edit Path: Users can switch to edit path mode by clicking an empty space in the breadcrumb bar or using the Ctrl + L keyboard shortcut. This mode automatically selects the current path, allowing for easy copying, overwriting, or modification without unnecessary clicks.
- Command Palette: Accessing the Command Palette has been simplified. Users can now click a dedicated button or use the Ctrl + Shift + P shortcut to reveal advanced commands, making this feature more accessible to those who may not have been aware of it previously.
- Search Functionality: The search mode can be activated by clicking the search icon or pressing Ctrl + F. Once opened, the search box is automatically focused, allowing users to start typing immediately. Search suggestions appear in a flyout, and hitting ‘Enter’ directs users to a dedicated search results page.
In addition to these features, the update introduces a filter button, enabling users to toggle effortlessly between search and filtering modes. For those utilizing OX Drive, Files now offers seamless integration right out of the box.
For users eager to explore these new functionalities, the Preview build is available for download on the Files website. Additionally, further insights into the application can be found in our comprehensive review of Files.
