Samsung’s upcoming One UI 7.0 is poised to introduce a host of notable changes to its mobile operating system, although the company has been somewhat reticent in sharing comprehensive details. However, a steady stream of leaks has provided glimpses into the design alterations that users can expect.
Among the changes, certain features will no longer be supported, with the Samsung DeX app for Windows being one of the more significant casualties. This decision marks a shift in how Samsung is streamlining its offerings.
Standalone DeX functionality remains unaffected
The Samsung DeX app has allowed users to mirror their mobile device screens on Windows PCs, facilitating an easy drag-and-drop file transfer between devices. This functionality differs from the standalone DeX experience available on Samsung phones and tablets, which delivers a full PC-like interface and supports peripherals such as keyboards and mice.
According to a recent discovery by AndroidAuthority on Samsung UK’s website, the DeX page indicates that the app will soon be discontinued. The notice states, “The DeX for PC on Windows OS will end support from One UI 7 version. We encourage customers to connect mobile phone and PC through the Link to Windows feature.”
This move appears to be part of Samsung’s strategy to simplify its offerings, especially as Microsoft has been developing similar capabilities that extend beyond Samsung devices to encompass a wider range of Android smartphones. The Link to Windows feature not only replicates the functionality of the DeX app but is also optimized for better performance.
In addition to the DeX app’s discontinuation, reports suggest that One UI 7.0 will also restrict Edge Panel downloads from the Galaxy Store. It seems that Samsung has taken a critical look at features that have seen limited usage and opted to eliminate them to enhance user experience. This focus on simplicity is a direction that many users may find beneficial.
