Microsoft has initiated the rollout of its highly anticipated hot patch update, specifically designed for security enhancements in Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 and Microsoft 365 Preview Builds. This innovative update allows users to seamlessly download and install security patches through Windows Updates without the need for a device reboot, ensuring a more efficient and uninterrupted workflow.
Understanding Hotpatch Updates
According to Microsoft, “Hotpatch updates are scoped and provide a complete set of OS security patches. No additional features are included.” This unique approach enables immediate activation of the patches upon installation, significantly enhancing the speed and focus of security protection for users.
However, it is important to note that hotpatching is limited to security patches only. As a result, Cumulative Updates, which are typically released during the first month of each quarter, will still require a system restart. Furthermore, for Windows Server 2022 and 2025, hotpatching does not extend to non-security updates, including those for Windows, .NET, as well as firmware, drivers, and other software updates.
Windows 11 Enterprise editions fall under the Windows Enterprise subscription umbrella, which includes plans such as Enterprise E3, Enterprise E5, and Microsoft 365 Enterprise. Subscribers to these plans will need a Windows 11 Pro license to access the full suite of features offered by Windows 11 Enterprise, which encompasses tools like Azure Virtual Desktop, Credential Guard, Direct Access, and Universal Print, among others. These Pro and Enterprise versions are tailored for business users, each serving specific operational needs.
While there is speculation regarding the potential introduction of hotpatching for Windows Home and Pro editions, it is worth noting that the feature is particularly advantageous for systems with complex deployments. The ability to avoid system restarts after updates can significantly reduce downtime, making it a practical solution for many business environments.
