Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting Remote Desktop functionality on Windows Server 2025 systems. This problem has emerged following the installation of security updates released since the February 2025 Patch Tuesday. According to a recent update on the company’s release health dashboard, users may experience freezes in Remote Desktop sessions shortly after establishing a connection. The company noted that after applying the February 2025 Security update (KB5051987) on February 11, 2025, and subsequent updates, users might find their mouse and keyboard inputs unresponsive, necessitating a disconnect and reconnect to regain functionality.
Interestingly, this issue is not isolated to Windows Server 2025; it has also impacted Windows 11 24H2 systems. However, Microsoft swiftly addressed the situation for Windows 11 users with the optional update KB5052093, released on February 25, which resolved the freezing problem within approximately two weeks.
In response to the ongoing challenges, Microsoft has assured users that a fix for the affected Windows Server 2025 devices will be included in an upcoming Windows update.
Fixes rolling out for more Remote Desktop issues
In addition to the aforementioned issue, Microsoft has implemented Known Issue Rollback (KIR), a feature designed to reverse problematic non-security updates. This measure aims to tackle similar Remote Desktop and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) connection issues that have arisen from Windows 11 24H2 updates released since January 2025.
Users on affected PCs may encounter Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) disconnections lasting up to 65 seconds when attempting to establish UDP connections from Windows 11 24H2 devices to RDS hosts operating on Windows Server 2016 systems. Although Windows Server 2025 devices do not serve as RDS hosts, they can still experience disconnections when functioning as RDP clients connecting to older servers.
Microsoft plans to roll out a permanent fix in next month’s cumulative updates, which will also address RDP disconnection issues for home users. In a related development, the company recently resolved another issue affecting Windows systems, where certain USB printers began printing random text following updates released since late January 2025.
Furthermore, Veeam disclosed in a Tuesday advisory that Microsoft is collaborating to investigate a known issue causing connection errors on Windows 11 24H2 systems when users attempt to restore data from SMB network shares or Backup & Replication servers.
