Samsung DeX for Windows is dead

Samsung is poised to phase out support for its DeX for Windows application with the anticipated release of the One UI 7 software update, scheduled for 2025. This development was highlighted by Android Authority, which noted recent updates on Samsung’s UK website indicating the discontinuation of this feature.

Transitioning to Phone Link

In a statement on its website, Samsung encouraged users of DeX for Windows to transition to the Phone Link feature as an alternative. “The DeX for PC on Windows OS will end support from One UI 7 version. We encourage customers to connect mobile phone and PC through the Link to Windows feature,” the company explained.

The DeX for Windows functionality allowed users to connect their smartphones to a PC, effectively transforming the Windows environment into a Samsung DeX interface, aptly named for its “Desktop eXperience.” While Phone Link may not replicate the full capabilities of DeX for Windows, it offers a viable substitute by enabling users to project their smartphone interface onto a computer screen and run applications remotely. Additionally, Phone Link supports wireless connectivity and is compatible with various Android brands beyond just Samsung.

This transition is a product of the ongoing collaboration between Samsung and Microsoft, which has brought the Phone Link feature to life for a range of devices. However, it remains unclear whether the discontinuation of DeX for Windows will prompt significant enhancements to Phone Link. Nevertheless, a recent leak from Samsung’s Spanish website hinted at substantial visual and functional updates in One UI 7, including several AI advancements.

Android Central speculated that Samsung’s decision to retire DeX for Windows may stem from low user adoption rates. While DeX will still be available, its focus will shift towards compatibility with TVs, monitors, and other larger-screen devices, as noted by the publication.
