NVIDIA’s recent announcement at Computex 2026 regarding the RTX Spark has stirred the waters of competition among major players in the silicon market, including Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm. In a surprising twist, Samsung is reportedly stepping into the arena with its own custom silicon, specifically tailored for AI-driven PCs. This marks a significant shift, as it is the first instance of Samsung developing PC-centric silicon since the launch of the Exynos 5 Dual in 2012, which was primarily designed for Chromebooks.
The new initiative, dubbed GAIA, is being crafted by Samsung’s System LSI business unit, indicating that this is not merely a trial run but a serious endeavor. Unlike traditional System-on-Chip (SoC) designs that integrate both CPU and GPU, the GAIA will serve as a companion Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This innovative approach allows the NPU to complement existing hardware by offloading AI tasks, enhancing overall computational efficiency.
According to reports from Chosun, as relayed by Tom’s Hardware, GAIA is anticipated to utilize a 4nm process that optimally positions computational functions in proximity to memory. Furthermore, Samsung is believed to be exploring processing-in-memory (PIM) capabilities, utilizing specialized DRAM that can process stored information directly, a move that could redefine performance benchmarks in the industry.
The GAIA NPU has already begun to make its presence felt beyond the confines of the laboratory, with Lenovo China and HP USA receiving samples for preliminary testing. This development comes at a time when competitors like Snapdragon X/X2, Intel Core Ultra, and AMD Ryzen AI are integrating NPUs capable of at least 40 TOPS into their designs. In parallel, Microsoft is reportedly testing Copilot+ AI workloads on discrete GPUs, suggesting a potential shift in how AI tasks are managed within PCs.
If Samsung’s GAIA proves to be effective, it could pave the way for a reevaluation of the stringent Copilot+ certification requirements, which currently emphasize integrated NPUs. The focus may shift towards harnessing raw AI power, regardless of its source, which could significantly alter the landscape of AI computing.
Many questions about Samsung GAIA remain unanswered
As it stands, Samsung’s GAIA silicon has not yet been officially confirmed, leaving several critical details shrouded in uncertainty. Information regarding TOPS, power consumption, and pricing remains elusive. Microsoft has yet to publicly comment on the matter, as there is little to discuss at this stage.
The 40 TOPS minimum threshold established by Microsoft for integrated NPUs was intended as a benchmark for assessing chip throughput. It remains to be seen whether a GAIA chip operating in conjunction with an Intel or AMD CPU would be evaluated under the same criteria, adding another layer of intrigue to this evolving narrative.
