On May 27, 2025, Microsoft will officially discontinue support for its Remote Desktop app, marking the end of an era for users who have relied on this tool. Following this date, the app will no longer be available for download or use. However, users need not worry about being left without options; they will simply need to transition to the Windows App, which has been available since September of last year.
The Windows App offers a suite of features designed to enhance user experience, providing unified access to various Windows services such as Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Remote PCs. In a recent post on the Tech Community, Microsoft highlighted several advantages of the Windows App over its predecessor:
- Unified access to multiple Windows services through a single, streamlined interface.
- Customizable home screens, support for multiple monitors, and dynamic display resolutions.
In addition to these features, the Windows App significantly enhances the remote work experience. It supports device redirection and is optimized for Microsoft Teams, allowing users to switch accounts with ease. After May 27, 2025, the Windows App will be the sole first-party option from Microsoft for accessing Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box, as connections through the Remote Desktop app will be blocked.
Remote Desktop app vs. Remote Desktop Connection app
Microsoft currently offers two remote desktop applications that, despite their similar names, serve distinct purposes. The Remote Desktop app, available through the Microsoft Store, is the one facing discontinuation. Users of this app will need to transition to the Windows App to maintain access to essential services.
Conversely, the Remote Desktop Connection app is a longstanding feature of Windows 11, allowing users to connect to PCs remotely. Unlike the Remote Desktop app, it is not limited to school or work accounts, as it supports personal accounts as well. This app has been built on the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and will continue to receive support from Microsoft.
As the transition approaches, users are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Windows App to ensure a seamless shift and to take full advantage of its enhanced capabilities.
