This bold Windows 12 Lite concept video imagines a new direction for Microsoft’s OS

Microsoft has a history of attempting to launch lighter versions of its Windows operating system, but past efforts have often fallen short, leading to their eventual discontinuation. In a refreshing twist, renowned concept designer AR4789 has reignited interest in this idea with a captivating video showcasing the Windows 12 Lite concept.

Windows 12 Lite concept video gives Microsoft cues on how to improve the look and feel of future versions of Windows

The vision presented in the Windows 12 Lite concept video diverges from the technical enhancements typically discussed by our Lead Windows Editor. While the latter focuses on functional improvements, the concept emphasizes aesthetic evolution, suggesting a new direction for the operating system’s visual identity.

Many elements showcased in the concept are not entirely novel. For instance, the floating taskbar, devoid of system icons, echoes earlier prototypes of Windows 12. However, the concept introduces some daring innovations, such as a bottom taskbar that exclusively displays applications, leaving system icons, search features, and the Start menu to a separate floating taskbar at the top. This design bears a resemblance to the macOS Menu bar, yet aims for enhanced functionality.

Distinct from Windows 11, the Windows 12 Lite concept maintains the trend of rounded corners for windows, buttons, and menus, a departure from the sharper edges seen in Windows 10 and 8. Interestingly, it also reintroduces a tiled Start menu, a feature that Microsoft eliminated in Windows 11.

Windows 12 Lite concept shows several other exciting changes

While Windows 11 builds upon its predecessors, incorporating numerous functionalities, the beauty of concept designs lies in their freedom from such constraints. The Windows Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) has seen gradual evolution, yet it retains many familiar elements.

The concept envisions a revamped Windows OOBE, integrating traditional features like disk partitioning within a more contemporary framework. The setup experience appears refreshed, though it does not stray far from the current Windows 11 interface. Notably, a new power button graces the Quick Settings menu, alongside other subtle enhancements.

Will Windows 12 ever be released?

Despite the absence of an official announcement from Microsoft regarding Windows 12, speculation suggests that the company may have been gearing up for its release this year. Instead, the focus shifted to the rollout of Windows 11 24H2, which introduced a plethora of new features. Some argue that this update serves as a precursor to Windows 12, allowing Microsoft to reserve the “12” label for a future milestone. Although nothing is confirmed, there remains a glimmer of hope for the eventual arrival of Windows 12.
