Windows 11 26H2: Expected features, platform changes, and potential release schedule

Windows 11 adheres to a structured annual feature update schedule, promising users a significant upgrade each year. The forthcoming Windows 11 26H2 update is anticipated to debut in late 2026, bringing with it a suite of new features and enhancements aimed at refining the user experience.

The 26H2 version is poised to be the next major update for the Windows 11 operating system, following the current 25H2 iteration, which is built on the Germanium platform first introduced with the 24H2 update. Notably, a Windows enthusiast and reliable leaker, known as @phantomofearth on X, has uncovered references to the 26H2 version within the Enablement KB26300 (EKB) update, suggesting it too will be rooted in the Germanium platform.

It is important to note that the 26H2 update may function as another enablement package, similar to its predecessor, 25H2. These packages typically do not introduce new features but rather activate existing functionalities already embedded in the current build, hence the term “Enablement.”

Expected features

As the 26H2 update is likely to be an enablement package, users should not expect sweeping changes. Instead, the enhancements will be more nuanced, focusing on improving overall usability. Based on insights from the Windows Insider Beta channel builds, the following features are anticipated:

  • Increased AI capabilities in applications such as Paint, Notepad, and Narrator.
  • Refined dark mode options across various File Explorer dialog boxes.
  • A revamped Run dialogue box.
  • Development of an AI-powered search feature, potentially launching alongside the 26H2 update.
  • Introduction of the Xbox Full Screen experience feature, already available on the ROG Xbox Ally.
  • General stability improvements, optimizations, and fixes for File Explorer.

These updates will elevate the Windows 11 build number to 26300.

Possible platform changes

The Windows 11 26H2 version is expected to remain on the Germanium platform, consistent with the previous 25H2 and 24H2 versions. In contrast, the upcoming Windows 11 26H1 update will be based on the Bromine platform, marking a distinct shift for that release.

Potential release schedule

Historically, Microsoft has released major updates in the latter part of the year, with version 24H2 launching in late 2024 and version 25H2 following suit in late 2025. Consequently, the 26H2 update is projected to arrive around the same timeframe in late 2026, likely targeting a September or October release window.
