As the calendar year draws to a close, Microsoft has opted to decelerate the pace of Windows 11 development. Nevertheless, the company has been active in releasing several preview builds through the Windows Insider Program during the first half of December, showcasing a range of enhancements. These updates include previews of versions 25H2 and 26H1, alongside improvements introduced in late November.
Biggest improvements from the Windows Insider Program in December 2025
Here’s a look at the noteworthy advancements rolled out by Microsoft since the last update.
Model Context Protocol (MCP)
In its ongoing commitment to integrating AI into Windows 11, Microsoft has introduced support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) starting with build 26220.7344 in the Dev and Beta Channels. This open standard facilitates seamless communication between AI agents, applications, tools, and services. According to Microsoft, AI agents can now discover and connect with other tools via a secure on-device registry (ODR). Additionally, two AI connectors have been launched: the File Explorer Connector and the Windows Settings Connector.
- The File Explorer Connector enables agents to interact with File Explorer, allowing users to manage local files through natural language searches based on descriptions, metadata, and content.
- The Windows Settings Connector helps users locate and modify settings, facilitating direct navigation to specific settings pages on Copilot+ PCs.
Update Orchestration Platform (UOP)
The same preview build introduced the Unified Update Orchestration Platform, designed to provide developers with a more consistent update experience via the Settings app. Developers can manage application updates through the “App Updates” section within Settings > Apps, while updates will continue to be sourced from the developer’s server, ensuring a streamlined process based on user activity.
Windows MIDI Services
December also saw the rollout of Windows MIDI Services in the Beta and Dev Channels, introducing a new MIDI API, Service, and SDK. This update brings full support for WinMM MIDI 1.0 and WinRT MIDI 1.0, enabling any API to utilize MIDI 1.0 or MIDI 2.0 devices. Enhancements include app-to-app MIDI support and loopback capabilities, alongside ongoing improvements and bug fixes.
Xbox Full Screen Experience for PCs
With build 28020.1362, the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) has been expanded to additional handheld gaming devices in the Canary Channel. This feature aims to replicate the console gaming experience on PCs. Users can activate this feature through Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience by toggling the “Enable full screen experience on startup” option.
Settings app with AI agent
The latest preview build in the Canary Channel has also enhanced the Settings app by integrating the AI agent already available on Copilot+ PCs. This addition facilitates easier navigation and modification of settings, with the “Recommended settings” card now displaying inline agent actions for recently modified settings.
File Explorer new dark mode improvements
Devices in the Canary Channel have received updates to the dark mode experience in File Explorer, extending the dark color scheme to various elements, including dialogs for copy, move, delete, and error messages. The search functionality has also been enhanced, allowing users to utilize AI for file and folder searches through natural language queries.
Drag Tray disable option
The Drag Tray feature, which allows users to drag files to the top of the screen for sharing with other applications, now includes an option for users to disable it. This can be managed through Settings > System > Nearby Sharing, where the “Drag Tray” toggle is available.
Mobile Devices settings integration
In the “Bluetooth & devices” section, Microsoft has integrated features for managing mobile devices directly within the Settings app. Previously, users had to navigate to an external page after linking their phone to their computer; this integration streamlines the process significantly.
Virtual Workspaces in Advanced settings
A new entry in the “Advanced” section now provides access to the “Virtual Workspaces” page, allowing users to manage virtualization features such as Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox without reverting to the legacy “Windows Features” page.
Keyboard and text cursor from Control Panel
Continuing its transition of Control Panel features to the Settings app, Microsoft has added two new settings: “Keyboard character repeat” and “Cursor blink rate.” These features allow users to customize their keyboard and cursor behavior directly from the Settings interface.
Quick Machine Recovery improvements
The Quick Machine Recovery feature, previously available in the Canary Channel, has undergone changes to enhance its functionality. Starting with the latest release, it will be enabled by default on Windows 11 Home and Pro editions, streamlining the troubleshooting process for users.
Windows Studio Effects for more cameras
Windows Studio Effects is now compatible with additional camera hardware, allowing users to achieve a polished look across various setups. This feature can be activated through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, where users can select their webcam and access advanced options.
Windows Spotlight for desktop changes
For users with Spotlight enabled on their desktop, a new context menu option allows for easy wallpaper changes and provides additional details about the current background. The Click to Do context menu has also been updated to include inline options for Copy, Save, Share, and Open.
Taskbar with Ask Copilot
With build 26220.7523, Windows 11 introduces a new toggle on the Taskbar settings page, allowing users to replace the traditional Windows Search experience with Copilot. This enhancement enables AI-driven searches for files, settings, and applications, along with access to other AI tools.
Taskbar with AI agents
The preview build has also rolled out AI agents for the Taskbar, part of Microsoft’s vision for an Agentic OS. This feature allows agents to function as apps in the Taskbar, providing real-time updates on ongoing tasks while operating securely.
Windows 11 Agent Launchers
Microsoft is unveiling Agent Launchers, a framework designed to register AI agents within the operating system, making them easily discoverable and launchable from compatible experiences. This framework allows for interactive workflows where agents can ask clarifying questions and retain context during tasks.
Narrator with new customization
The Narrator feature has received a personalization update, enabling users to select which properties are announced as they navigate applications. This customization can be easily managed through a new interface, allowing for a tailored experience.
Voice Typing with new animation in Touch Keyboard
The updated Touch Keyboard introduces a new animation for the dictation key, enhancing the user experience. Additionally, a new “Discover Windows” widget has been added to the Widgets board, providing helpful tips for users.
Voice Access streamlined setup
The latest preview also simplifies the setup process for Voice Access, guiding users through downloading the appropriate speech model and selecting their preferred microphone.
As we look forward to the new year, the Windows Insider Program will pause further builds until January, leaving users with much to explore and anticipate in the upcoming updates.
