Microsoft has issued a caution regarding a specific issue that arises when utilizing media support to install Windows 11, version 24H2. This complication results in the operating system being unable to accept subsequent security updates.
The challenge manifests when installation is performed using CD or USB flash drives, particularly with security updates that were released between October 8 and November 12. Microsoft has clarified, “When using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates.”
According to the company, this situation occurs exclusively when the installation media is created to incorporate the security updates from October 2024 or November 2024. However, it’s important to note that this bug does not affect security updates that are applied through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog. Moreover, installations using the latest December 2024 security update, which was released on December 10, are not impacted by this issue.
In light of this, Microsoft is actively pursuing a permanent solution and advises users to utilize the December 2024 security update for media-based installations of Windows 11 24H2 to prevent future updating complications.
Windows 11 24H2 issues
This installation media issue adds to a growing list of challenges associated with the 24H2 update, which is the latest major feature enhancement for Microsoft’s operating system. Released earlier this year, the update aimed to bolster security, usability, and performance.
Prior to this, users of Windows 11 24H2 faced various difficulties, including:
- Audio issues with Dirac devices and USB DAC sound systems
- Problems launching Outlook when utilizing outdated Google Workspace Sync
- Game freezes and incorrect colors due to Auto HDR
- Functional challenges with USB scanners that support the eSCL protocol
Additionally, the major update has been linked to performance issues, crashes, freezes, and audio glitches in several Ubisoft games, including well-known titles such as Assassin’s Creed, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Furthermore, the Windows 11 24H2 update faced temporary blocks on specific ASUS hardware and various other software/hardware configurations that led to complications.
