Windows 11 just took its first major step toward version 26H2, and Insiders can already test 9 features shaping Microsoft’s next big update

As June draws to a close, Microsoft has rolled out a series of updates for Windows 11, aimed at enhancing the overall user experience. While these updates may not feature groundbreaking changes, they signify a steady evolution of the operating system. Notably, Microsoft has confirmed that development is actively underway for Windows 11 version 26H2, marking the next significant milestone in its roadmap. In the latter half of June, preview builds within the Experimental channel transitioned their versioning from 25H2 to 26H2, indicating a formal shift into this new development cycle.

Biggest improvements from the Windows Insider Program in June 2026

Here are some of the most noteworthy updates Microsoft has introduced recently:

Windows 11 version 26H2

In a subtle yet significant change, Microsoft has officially updated the version number from 25H2 to 26H2, starting with build 26300.8697 in the Experimental experience. Users can verify this change in Settings > System > About, under the “Windows Info” section, or by executing the “winver” command. However, the “Windows Insider Program” still reflects the channel as “Windows 11, version 25H2.” This transition indicates that all features released in the Experimental channel will be integrated into version 26H2. One notable update includes enhancements to the “Search” page, where users can now disable web searches and Microsoft Store apps from appearing in search results.

Mobile Devices changes

As part of the updates for version 26H1, builds 28120.2374 and 28020.2366 have revamped the Mobile Devices page within the Settings app, allowing for better configuration and management of mobile devices.

Emoji panel changes

Additionally, the GIF provider has been switched to GIPHY in version 26H1, replacing the previous Tenor API, thereby enhancing the experience of browsing and sharing GIFs.

Taskbar resize option

Build 26300.8758 for version 26H2 introduces a new option in Taskbar settings, allowing users to select a smaller Taskbar size. This feature includes two settings: “Default” and “Small.” Choosing the “Small” option will disable the “Show smaller app icons” feature, and there is also a new description under the “Automatically hide the taskbar” setting.

Sounds in dark mode

While not a dramatic enhancement, build 26300.8758 also improves system sounds when utilizing the dark mode, contributing to a more cohesive user experience.

XBOX branding

In response to user feedback, the Gaming section has been rebranded to “XBOX mode,” reflecting a fresh approach to the brand.

Screen tint new feature

For users seeking accessibility options, Windows 11 build 29617 introduces a new feature called “Screen tint.” This system-wide color overlay is designed to alleviate eye strain by softening overly bright or saturated displays. Unlike the Night Light feature, which primarily targets blue light reduction at night, Screen tint adjusts the overall intensity and color tone during the day. Users can access this feature in Settings > Accessibility > Vision > Screen tint, with six preset colors and a custom color option, along with an intensity slider. However, enabling Screen tint will disable Color Filters, and vice versa.

Magnifier new zoom controls

The Magnifier feature has also received several enhancements, allowing users to input specific zoom percentages directly, rather than relying solely on the zoom-in and zoom-out buttons. Additional zoom presets are now available, including 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 400 percent.

Personalization changes

Microsoft has improved the personalization experience by enhancing the accuracy of automatic accent color selection, ensuring a better match between the chosen accent color and the desktop wallpaper. Furthermore, the company has resolved an issue that affected how background images were preserved across restarts and upgrades. While these improvements are already available in other channels, they will reach the Future Platforms version in build 29617.

Windows Central’s Take

The direction Microsoft is taking with these Insider builds is commendable. Although there isn’t a single feature that dramatically alters the Windows 11 experience, this steady refinement is valuable. Enhancements such as a dedicated Taskbar size setting and improved accessibility features may not make headlines, but they contribute to a more polished operating system. The official transition to version 26H2 is also noteworthy. Based on Microsoft’s recent release strategy, it seems the upcoming feature update will prioritize enhancing existing functionalities over introducing flashy new features. This focus on performance, consistency, and usability is a welcome approach. However, as these remain preview builds, caution is advised for those considering installation on primary devices.
