Microsoft has unveiled a significant update for its Notepad application on Windows 11, marking a transformative shift in how users can interact with text. This latest enhancement introduces the capability to generate, rewrite, and summarize text using on-device AI models, eliminating the previous dependency on cloud processing.
Local AI Processing
Historically, the generative AI features within Notepad required an internet connection, relying on cloud resources to handle user queries. This functionality was also linked to a Microsoft 365 subscription, necessitating users to be signed into a Microsoft account. However, the new update liberates users from these constraints. With the integration of on-device AI, you can now generate text without being online, signed in, or subscribed to Microsoft 365. This advancement is made possible through the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) found in Copilot+ PCs, which handles all processing locally.
Dave Grochocki, Microsoft’s principal group product manager, emphasizes this shift: “Notepad now supports AI features like Summarize, Write, and Rewrite on Copilot+ PCs, with no subscription required. If you have a subscription, you can seamlessly switch between local and cloud models based on your needs. If you’re not signed in or don’t have a subscription, you can use the local model to accomplish your tasks.”
Enhanced Functionality
The Notepad application has undergone a series of enhancements over recent months, evolving beyond its traditional role as a basic text editor. Users can now enjoy an array of new formatting options, spell check capabilities, tabbed browsing, and various quality-of-life improvements. While it retains its simplicity for those who prefer basic editing, it is now equipped to handle more complex tasks with ease.
The updated Notepad is currently rolling out in preview for Windows Insiders within the Canary and Dev Channels, with plans for a broader release to all users in the near future.
