Windows 11 Paint now lets you hide ‘toolbar,’ and is also getting new AI features

Microsoft Paint has introduced a new feature that allows users to automatically hide the toolbar, providing a cleaner workspace for those who frequently utilize the application. This toggle enables the toolbar to remain hidden until it is needed, offering a streamlined experience for users focused on their creative tasks.

The toolbar’s expansion, particularly following its recent “modern” UI revamp, has made it occupy more screen real estate. With the new toggle, users can easily hide the toolbar, allowing for a more immersive experience when working on the canvas. This is especially beneficial for tasks that require precision, such as tight editing or adding final touches. While the potential use cases may seem limited, the added flexibility is a welcome enhancement in an application that continues to evolve.

Paint gets new AI features as part of “Labs.”

In addition to the toolbar update, Microsoft Paint is also embracing artificial intelligence with new features under its “Windows AI Labs” program. Although access to this program is somewhat restricted, users fortunate enough to participate can explore innovative tools like the newly refined “Generative Edit.”

This feature, which has seen significant improvements following recent updates, allows users to modify images through text prompts. Unlike previous iterations, which primarily focused on image generation, the Generative Edit option enables more interactive editing capabilities. Microsoft has indicated that this AI model is proprietary and not based on GPT technology.

While the potential for creativity is exciting, Microsoft has included a cautionary note within the app, encouraging users to provide feedback if they encounter unexpected or inappropriate results from the AI. This highlights the ongoing challenge of ensuring AI-generated content aligns with user expectations.

It’s important to note that features within the AI Labs, such as Generative Edit, may not be permanent. Microsoft has a history of testing various functionalities, including a previous attempt at integrating animation capabilities, which ultimately did not make it into the final version of Paint. As the application continues to develop, users will be watching closely to see which features endure and which are left behind.
