Microsoft is making strides in enhancing the audio experience for users with its latest initiative, “shared audio.” This innovative feature is currently being tested on Copilot+ PCs and leverages the capabilities of Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast technology.
Enhancing Connectivity with Bluetooth LE Audio
Traditionally, connecting multiple Bluetooth devices to a single audio source has been a challenge. Users often found themselves limited to a single connection, whether it was a Bluetooth speaker or earbuds. However, with the advent of Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast technology, Windows is poised to change that narrative. This advancement allows for simultaneous audio streaming to two Bluetooth devices, breaking down the barriers that previously restricted users.
In the current landscape, if you connect a Bluetooth speaker and an earbud, only one device can receive audio at a time. Even attempts to connect both simultaneously have not yielded the desired results. Fortunately, modern modems equipped with Bluetooth LE Audio technology are paving the way for a more seamless audio experience.
Microsoft’s introduction of the shared audio feature in Windows 11 Build 26220.7051 (KB5067115) is a significant step forward. Users can easily activate the “Shared audio (preview)” option through quick settings, allowing them to share music or watch movies together, whether they are studying with a friend or enjoying a film on a flight.
Once the audio sharing begins, users can simply select “Stop sharing” to conclude the session. Microsoft has indicated that support for additional devices will be expanded in the future. Currently, the shared audio feature is compatible with a select range of PCs:
- Surface Laptop, 13.8-inch and 15-inch* | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
- Surface Laptop for Business, 13.8 and 15-inch* | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
- Surface Pro, 13-inch | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
- Surface Pro for Business, 13-inch | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
Looking ahead, more devices are set to join the ranks:
- Samsung Galaxy Book5 360 | Intel Core Ultra Series 200
- Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro | Intel Core Ultra Series 200
- Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro 360 | Intel Core Ultra Series 200
- Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
- Surface Laptop, 13-inch | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
- Surface Laptop for Business, 13-inch | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
- Surface Pro, 12-inch | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
- Surface Pro for Business, 12-inch | Qualcomm Snapdragon X
It is important to note that users will also need compatible audio accessories to take full advantage of the shared audio feature. Most modern Bluetooth devices, including Galaxy Buds2 Pro, Buds3, and Buds3 Pro, are designed to support this functionality.
This feature is currently being rolled out to participants in the Windows Insider Program’s Dev and Beta channels, marking an exciting development for audio enthusiasts and everyday users alike.
